SENATE CHAMBER,

DES MOINES, Iowa, Tuesday, March 29, 1904.

Senate met in regular session at 9:30 o'clock A.M., President Herriott presiding.

Prayer was offered by the Rev. W. A. Schwimley of Anita, Iowa.

On request of Senator Jones leave of absence was granted Senator Brooks for the day.

On request of Senator Hughes leave of absence was granted Senator Wade for the day.

On request of Senator Gilliland leave of absence was granted Senator Whipple indefinitely.

PETITIONS AND MEMORIALS.

Senator Young of Calhoun presented petition of forty-four residents of Calhoun county in support of the passage of a drainage law.

Referred to committee on Agriculture.

Senator Gilliland presented resolutions adopted by the Republican county convention of Montgomery county, Iowa, favoring changes in the present road law and the enacting of House file No. 195, known as the "Chassell bill."

Passed on file.

Senator Bleakly presented petition of Presbyterian church of Ida Grove, Iowa, in favor of a law limiting the duration of saloon consent petitions to three years.

Referred to committee on Suppression of Intemperance.

Senator Harper called up the concurrent resolution offered by him relative to adjournment.

Senator Harper moved the adoption of the resolution.

Adopted.

Senator Dunham called up the resolution offered by him relative to the appointment of a sifting committee.

Senator Dunham asked unanimous consent that further consideration of the resolution be postponed.

Granted.

Senator Winne filed the following motion:

MR. PRESIDENT-I move to reconsider the vote by which concurrent resolution to adjourn April 8th passed the Senate.

Senator Gale offered the following resolution:

Senator Gale moved the adoption of the resolution.

PRESIDENT-Your committee on Compensation of Public Officers, to whom was referred House file No. 248, a bill for an act to repeal section four hundred and seventy-nine (479) of the code, relating to the compensation of county auditors and to enact a substitute therefor, beg leave to report that they have had the same under consideration and have instructed me to report the same back to the Senate with the recommendation that the same do pass.

THIRD READING OF BILLS.

On motion of Senator Courtright, Senate file No. 118, a bi for an act repealing section 738 of the code, was taken up and considered.

Senator Courtright moved that the Senate concur in the following House amendments:

Amend the title by adding after the figures "738" the words and figures "seven hundred and thirty-nine (739)."

Also, amend section 1so as to read: 'Section 1. That sections 738 and 739 of the code be, and the same are hereby repealed."

On the question, Shall the House amendments be concurred in?

THIRD READING OF BILLS.

On motion of Senator Courtright, Senate file No. 112, a bill for an act to provide for the construction of sewers by incorporated towns, was taken up and considered.

Senator Courtright moved that the Senate concur in the following House amendment:

Amend Senate file by inserting the word "incorporated" before word "town" in line seven (7) .
