with his son, Theodore M. Taft, under the firm name of E. N. & T. M. Taft.

He took a deep interest in educational matters and for many years was a trustee of Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn and a member of the Long Island Historical Society. For forty years he served as trustee of the American Seamen's Friend Society, and was one of the promoters of the Brooklyn branch of the Young Men's Christian Association. He took part in a number of well-known cases, and was in every way a credit to his profession.

Mr. Taft was an eminently reliable adviser and devoted himself to a great extent to commercial law. In later life, especially, he had a large experience in Admiralty, both as counsel and in his capacity of United States Commissioner for the Southern District of New York, an office he held for several years prior to his death.

Mr. Taft was elected a member of the New York State Bar Association in 1883.
