BIBLICAL ENCYCLOPÆDIA.

In the course of publication, in Monthly Parts, with Six Plates in each Part, price 6s.

each, (Eight of which are already published, the Fifth Edition, revised and greatly

improved, with a new and copious Index, of VALMET'S DICTIONARY of the HOLY BIBLE, with the

V Fragments of the late Mr. C. TAYLOR; a Series of valuable Dissertations, contaiping entirely new Illustrations of Scripture incidents and expressions, selected from the most authentic Historians, Travellers, &c. Illustrated by several Hundred Plates,

At a period of time so long subsequent to its original publication, and after it has been placed by universal consent at the head of Biblical Encyclopædias, it would be superfluous to expatiate upon the composition or character of CALMET'S DICTIONARY OF THE Holy Bible. Whether we regard the extent and variety of its information, or the profound and enlightened tone of its criticism, it stands unrivalled in that important and interesting branch of literature to which it belongs.

In the Fifth Edition, to which the attention of the public is now respectfully solicited, every effort has been made to secure the accuracy, and extend the usefulness, of the work. The references and quotations, amounting to many thousands, have been verified and corrected. The EXPLANATIONS OF TAE Plates, hitherto detached from the body of the work, to the great inconvenience of the reader, have been incorporated with the articles of which they form an integral part; the whole of the text has passed under a diligent revision, and SEVERAL entirely new articles, as well as occasional additions, have been introduced. To the whole will be added, a NEW and COPIOUS INDEX, embracing every subject treated of in the work, as well as the several texts of Scripture illustrated and explained.

The Plates (in this new edition) have been carefully revised, and it is the intention of the publisher to give, for the first time, a finely-engraved PORTRAIT of Dom CALMET, and such additional plates as may be found necessary to the improvement of the work.

The Editor of the Fifth Edition, now in the course of publication, takes this opportu. nity to acknowledge his obligations to several gentlemen who have favoured him with hints and suggestions for the improvement of the work, and to solicit similar assistanco from others, who may feel disposed to further his exertions in completing a publication which may be rendered eminently contributive to the interests of Biblical Literature. The following extract from the Scientific Analysis will show the numerous

subjects treated of in this BIBLICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA: I. LITERATURE.- Language - Grammar-Rhetoric-Criticism-Learning-Bib

CHARACTER OF THIS WORK. “ It is certainly a work without which no library can be complete, and with which few other books, explanatory of Scripture, can be required; since it comprehends everything that has either a proximate or remote reference to the sacred writings. To the Orientalist, to the Biblical scholar, to the general reader, and, more especially, to the minister of the Gospel, (for we omitted to mention that an Index of Texts and Subjects incidentally illustrated, is added to the fourth volume,) it presents an inexhaustible fund of instruction; while to all it supplies amusement of the most elevated kind."'New Monthly Mag., Nov., 1827.

6 Calmer's DictIONARY has always been in great and deserved estimation. The additional illustrations to this edition appear to be INGENIOUS and 1MPORTANT." - British Critic.

Calmet's Dictionary of the Bible is, in itself, a work which no Biblical scholar would like to be without; BUT ITS MERE RE-PUBLICATION WOULD HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY UNACCEPTABLE. As a whole, the work, IN ITS PRESENT FORM, is an invaluable treasury of Biblical lore, and a stupendous monument of literary industry.”Eclectic Review, Vol. XXII. p. 455.

Dr. Mant has made great use of CALMet in the Notes to his Bible, published by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge ; and in his list of books, to which he acknowledges obligations, particularly specifies the “ FRAGMENTS” annexed to this edition of Calmet.

“The work is pleasingly illustrated with numerous engravings, which convey an accurate idea of Oriental manners and Customs. CalMET's DictionARY IS THE BASIS OF ALL MODERN WORKS OF THE LIKE KIND."--Horne's Introduction to lhe Critical Study and Knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, Vol. II. p. 746, fifth edition.

*** See, also, Monthly Review, Monthly Magazine, &c. &c. A GENERAL INDEX to the Fourth Edition of CALMET'S DICTIONARY of the BIBLE, and the FRAGMENTS: comprising an Alphabetical List of Subjects, and a methodical Arrangement of Texts, illustrated and explained : to which is prefixed, a Scientific Analysis, or general outline of the Work. 4to. Price 5s.

** Prospectuses of the Fifth Edition of Calmet's Dictionary of the Bible, with the Fragments, greatly improved, which is now in the course of publication, in Parts, at 6s. each ; (eight of which are published,) may be bad gratis of the Publishers as above,

“ This is a novel of the most extraordinary fertility; the creations of the author's brain are innumerable : we never met in the same compass, and it is no small one, so many characters--so many incidents, such a mass of matter-of-fact fiction.. Since all the people are young and fashionable; since there is love of every description described and exemplified ; since marriages take place, two generations deep, under every variety of feeling ; since many of the events are tragical; since accomplishments and beauty abound in all shapes; since, in short, it is a good picture of all that happens between the ages of eighteen and twenty-eight among a large aristocratical connexion, it must assuredly be a popular book with all lovers of novels. It is, in truth, the book of matrimony." -- Atlas.

Dedicated by Permission to His Majesty, in 3 vols. post 8vo. price 11. 118. 6d.
THE ROMANCE of HISTORY.-ENGLAND.

By HENRY NEELE. Truth is strange-stranger than fiction.—LORD BYRON. « The materials for Mr. Neele's work have not been selected from the ordinary and well-known sources. He appears to have read very diligently the older chronicles of England and France, and those poetical romances which are almost the only speci. ments of the literature of the age before that in which we commonly place the revival of modern learning. His tales, by these means, are valuable illustrations of English manners at the various periods to which they relate, and, in their way, striking commentaries on the history of the country. The stories are full of variety and incident, and it is difficult to point out which are best deserving of notice."-- Times.
