Lafitte.-The Red Doctor. Translated from the French of J. P. LAFITTE by HUON D'ARAMIS. 12mo, cloth, pp. 347. Philadelphia, 1866. 9s.

Count Struensee and Dr. Mesmer are the principal actors in this interesting tale. It professes to deal with matters of some historical interest in connection with the affairs of Denmark, but it lacks that minute examination of character and that descriptive art which render so many of our historical novels more valuable even than genuine history itself in conveying instruction. The life and career of the famous Struensee would be a fine subject for an accomplished novelist.
