Goodrich.-The Tribute Book. A Record of the Munificence, Self Sacrifice, and Patriotism of the American People during the War for the Union. Illustrated. By FRANK B. GOODRICH, author of "The Court of Napoleon," etc. Royal 8vo. morocco, extra, pp. 512. New York, 1865. £5.

A magnificent volume, in which art and mechanical labour struggle for pre-eminence. It is elegantly printed on a splendid tinted paper, illustrated with 147 woodcuts of varied merit, all designed and engraved by American artists, and superbly bound in extra morocco. So sumptuous a volume we have rarely seen. It has been published at the sole expense of Mr. G. Jones, one of the proprietors of the New York Times, and its cost must have been enormous. It records the patriotism and philanthropy of the American people, who, not content with bearing a taxation of three thousand millions of dollars for the prosecution of the war, voluntarily raised seventy millions in addition, in order to give increased comforts to their soldiers, and to aid the efforts of their Government. It is a remarkable story, deserving of being placed on record, and well worthy of being embalmed in so rich a casket. We are old-fashioned enough, however, to feel some little objection to this parade of names, which we think has in it something of ostentation-to "do good by stealth and blush to find it fame" we fear is now out of date.

Howe.-Later Lyrics. By JULIA WARD HOWE. Post 8vo. cloth, pp. 326. Boston, 1866. 10s.

There is real poetic strength and power in this volume. The writer is evidently a lady of cultivated and enlarged tastes, familiar with the writings of the great modern thinkers, and accustomed to philosophical thought and study. Though there are few poems of any pretension in the volume, all are worth reading, for each is in itself a study. Her patriotism and chivalrous feelings find utterance in some stirring poems of the war, which will live long, if we mistake not, in the memory of her countrymen.

This a Conservative view of the internal causes which led to the late war. The author endeavours to prove what many English writers have all along asserted, that slavery was not the cause of the war, and that the anti-slavery feeling prior to the war was of no serious consequence till it was laid hold of by rival politicians in order to secure political power. "Philanthropists," he says, might have sighed, and fanaticism have howled for centuries in vain, but for the hope of office and the desire of public plunder on the part of men who were neither philanthropists nor fanatics."

Palmer.-Four Years in the Old World. Comprising the Travels, Incidents, and Evangelistic Labours of Dr. and Mrs. Palmer, in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. By the author of "The Way of Holiness," etc. (Mrs. Palmer). 8vo. cloth, pp. 700. New York, 1866. 15s. The author of this work is a "Revivalist" and teacher of the doctrine of "Christian Perfection" or "Perfect Holiness,"-a doctrine maintained in England by the Wesleyan Methodists alone, but which in America has adherents in all the Evangelical Churches. Mrs

Palmer's books are considered the most popular illustrations of this doctrine, and have sold by thousands in the United States, in Canada, and in England. To promote a belief in this theory, she has travelled repeatedly over nearly every part of the North American continent, and has by her preaching and teaching added numbers to the church. A few years back she and her husband, a physician then in good practice in New York, felt themselves impelled to visit England, and endeavour to promote "revivals," and to extend the belief in the doctrine of "holiness" in the British Isles. This volume contains a narrative of their proceedings and the success that attended them. It will be of much interest to those who were brought into communication with Mrs. Palmer, whose earnestness in her labours and manifest sincerity impressed even those who doubted her doctrine and questioned the propriety of female ministrations in religious

matters.

By JOHN MCCLINTOCK, D.D. Crown 8vo. cloth, pp, 287. New York, 1866. 68.

Dr. Stevens has already written at length the History of Methodism, and has given to the public a work which will hereafter take the first rank among Ecclesiastical Records. In this volume he gives a summary of the historical results of Methodism in America-a plain statement of its doctrines and statistics of its strength, educational proceedings and influence. From it we learn that from a congregation of five persons, who met together in 1760 in a private house, has sprung an ecclesiastical organization numbering now in actual communicants nearly one million in the Northern States, about 700,000 in the Southern States, and about 80,000 in Canada, possessing in the Northern States alone church property valued at 27 millions of dollars, supporting 25 colleges and theological schools, 77 academies, 13,400 Sunday schools, 5,743 ministers, with a literature of its own of great value, its 14 periodicals circulating monthly at least one million copies, while under the influence of the Northern and Southern branches and Canadian organization it has been estimated there are more than 7 millions of members and hearers. Such is the result of the vigorous exercise of ministerial labour in one century.
