Dear Sir:-I have received through the Canadian Bank of Commerce, New York, by cable to the Bank of Tarapaca and Argentina, Valparaiso, the sum of $5,000 American gold, the gift of citizens of San Francisco to the earthquake sufferers in Valparaiso. I delivered yesterday to the Minister of Foreign Affairs a certificate of deposit for the amount, in Chilean currency. As you probably know, the first donation received in Santiago was the sum of $10,000 American gold, from the citizens of San Francisco. I delivered the certificate of deposit to the President three or four days after the earthquake. This latter gift makes $15,000, a wonderful act of charity from a city stricken in a like manner only a few months since. As no name was mentioned in the notice from the bank, I send this acknowledgement to you and I shall be glad if you will notify the proper persons that the money has been delivered to the Chilean authorities. Very sincerely yours, JOHN HICKS, Financial Condition FINANCIAL CONDITION OF THE CITY AND COUNTY OF SAN FRANCISCO ON THE FIRST DAY OF OCTOBER, 1909.
