Last Night in the Gloaming.

HEARD the birds sing

ing last night in
the gloaming;

Their music was sweet
as a heavenly choir;
They twittered and
chirped as they
came from
their
roaming,

And each tried the
loudest to tune its
wee lyre.

The robin was there in
its nest in the
willow;

Twas chirping its birdlings a sweet lullaby. The bluebird was smoothing its soft, downy pillow,

And calling its mate, still up in the sky.

The daisies were nodding out in the green meadow,
Their round, golden eyes were beginning to

close:

The larkspur and buttercup, down by the brookside,

Were saying good-night to the rose.

The sun, who was sinking behind the green hilltops,

Peeped out from a cloud and winked his red eye; Methinks he was whispering the bright clouds

around him

"I am going to rest now, I'll say good-bye."

The shadows grew deeper. The birds were soon sleeping;

The flowers had closed their sweet petals so
bright;

While over the mountain the crescent moon peep-
ing,
Seemed to answer the sun-" Good-night,
friend, good-night."

-Lulu M. Downs.

A Fateful Disaster.

BY NEWTON H. IVINS.

DNA SINGLETON was thrown into an ecstasy of delight when she received word from her brother, Robert, begging her to come out and spend the Summer with him on the farm in the

rural districts of Pennsylvania, not many miles from the city of Harrisburg. She was at that time living with a maiden aunt in the city of Philadelphia, and she had already grown tired of the social life she was compelled to lead in that great city. Besides, it was not the sort of life to which she had been accustomed. girlhood had been passed on their father's farm-a beautiful estate on the Juniata, now being managed by her brother Robert-and she had grown up with a love of all the social surroundings of a rural home. But great bereavements had come, and left the brother and sister alone in the possession of as fine a piece of landed property as could be boasted of anywhere in the vicinity of Richland, the railway station and village adjacent to their country seat.

Her brother, who was her senior by several years, had a family consisting of a wife and two children-a boy and girl, aged respectively 11 and 9 years. Roland was a bright, industrious boy, a great favorite with the horses and dogs, and was greatly beloved by his father. His sister Grace was equally fond of out-door sports, and was, withal, the pet of the family.

On the day appointed for the arrival of Edna, Robert and his wife, Emma, drove over to the little village of Richland in the family carriage to meet Edna upon her arrival.

Robert was agreeably surprised at the change in his sister since he had last seen her, which was now nearly a year. She had developed from budding young girlhood into a beautiful young lady.

Arrived at home, Edna was delighted beyond her expectations. It seemed to her that she had never known surroundings so enchanting. Besides, she was with those she knew and loved best. Robert's wife was to her a great source of joy.
