COMMITTEE ON WAYS AND MEANS. The committee was called to order by the chairman (Hon. Joseph Fordney) at 10 o'clock a. m. METALS IN GENERAL. HERBERT W. SMITH, CHIEF OF TARIFF DIVISION, AMERICAN MINING CONGRESS, WASHINGTON, D. C. Mr. SMITH. I am serving as chief of the tariff division of the American Mining Congress, Washington, D. C. There are 16 mineral industries which will come before you asking for protection by tariff. Of these, two, barytes and mica, have been heard. Nine will be heard on the free list, and five are before you to-day under Schedule C. Antimony (paragraph 144) is produced in this country in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and California, and meets competition from China and from Mexico. The China deposits are large and cheaply mined service operation, as are Mexico. Molybdenum (paragraph 102) is mined in this country only in Texas, Maine, Wyoming, and Colorado. It meets competition from Canada, Austria, and Norway. Mercury (paragraph 159) is produced in California, Texas, and Idaho, and meets competition from Spain, Italy, and Austria. Lead is produced largely throughout the country, and our domestic deposits are large and well developed, and it meets competition from Mexico, Canada, and Chile. Zinc, in which the same condition applies as our domestic products, meets competition from Mexico, Belgium, Germany, and Australia. These industries are asking for the rates which follow: Antimony, 10 cents per pound on the mineral content; mercury, 50 cents per pound on mercury imported in flasks and the same when the mercury is contained in ore. Molybdenum: 50 cents for the molybdenum contained in ores and 70 cents when the molybdenum is contained in the alloys. The representatives of the various industries will appear before you and present their individual problems. The lead men will appear Thursday and Friday and state the rate they need. |
