RULE A WIFE AND HAVE A WIFE.

Dieses lustspiel schrieb Fletcher allein, denn „,it was licensed" am 19. Oktober 1624 von Sir Henry Herbert, also acht jahre nach dem tode Beaumonts. In Malone's Shakespeare (hsg. von Boswell, III. 226, 228) finden wir die bemerkungen:

"Upon All-hollows night, 1624, the king beinge at Roiston, no play." The night after, my Lord Chamberlin had Rule a Wife and Have a Wife for the ladys, by the kings company.

"Upon St. Steevens night, the prince only being there, Rule a Wife and Have a Wife, by the kings company. Att. Whitehall."

Eine quelle für die haupthandlung des stückes ist nicht bekannt. Köppel sieht in Leon „eine glückliche nachahmung von Ben Jonson's schelmischer Epicoene" (vgl. p. 116, QuellenStudien).

Die nebenhandlung, die sich auf Perez und Estifania bezieht, ist aus der elften der Cervantes'schen Novelas Exemplares genommen, welche betitelt ist: El Casamiento Engañoso. Weber giebt eine inhaltsangabe derselben, die Dyce with very considerable alterations" dem stücke voraus schickt. vellenstoffes in der Weltlitteratur." Wissenschaftl. Beilage zum Jahresbericht der VI. städt. Realsch. Berlin, Ostern 1894, Progr. 121. (Kritisiert im Beiblatt der Anglia Okt. 1894, p. 170.) Bis zur schliessung der theater war das stück zweifellos beliebt; während des theaterverbots hatte man sein vergnügen an einer „droll", „An Equall Match", die daraus genommen ist, vergl. Kirkmans sammlung „The Wits, or Sport upon Sport", Part First, 1672, p. 45. Auch nach der wiedereröffnung der schauspielhäuser wurde „Rule a Wife and Have a Wife" gern gesehen und noch zur zeit des A. Dyce gelegentlich gespielt. Im jahre 1759 erschien eine bearbeitung des stückes mit dem namen Garricks als verfasser, doch stellt die Biog. Dram. (1812) diese autorschaft in abrede, „,having seen an express and positive disavowal of it under his hand, in a letter dated Aug. 19, 1776".

Der erste druck, in quarto, stammt aus dem jahre 1640; ich nenne ihn a. Er führt den titel:

D (... we're ...) bezieht diese worte auf den umstand, dass Middletons stück „Game at Chess", welches kurz vor dem 12. Aug. 1624 im Globetheater neun mal aufgeführt worden war, und sich zum teil gegen den spanischen hof richtete, verboten wurde, nachdem sich der spanische gesandte bei könig Jakob beklagt hatte.

The errors too, doe not for this caufe hate,
Now we prefent their wit and not their state.
Nor, Ladies, be not angry if you fee,

A young fresh beauty, wanton, and too free,
Seeke to abuse your Husband, 1) ftill 'tis Spaine;

Notes, verteidigt die alte lesart und sagt: „The sense is, We players pretty nearly resemble the ancient Vestals; we keep the fire of love aliye, and gently blow it, for such is for the most part the tendency of the pieces we represent; but we seldom make it flame up as high as desire; our action - has very rarely so dangerous an effect as that upon the audience." D bemerkt hierzu: „To suppose that the poet would make "these harlotry players" call themselves "vestals" is surely ridiculous."

Enthält ein bild darstellend Mifs Barsanti in the Character of Estifania, wie sie einen schmuck anlegt, Akt IV1: „See how it fparkles-like an old lady's eyes"; ausserdem denselben prolog und epilog, ein personenverzeichnis und ist in akte und scenen eingeteilt, ohne dass letztere numeriert sind. Diese ausgabe ist, wie die beiden vorausgehenden, eine „alteration"; manche scenen fehlen, manches ist verändert und in anderen text gekleidet.

Aus dem 19. jahrhundert finden wir eine reihe von drucken, 1) zum grossen teil bühnendrucke und bühnenbearbeitungen von Kemble und Garrick.
