Excerpt from A Treatise Concerning Religious Affections: In Three Parts

Such trials are of threefold benefit to true religion. Hereby the truth of it is manifef'ted, and it appears to be indeed true religion1they, above all other things, have a tendency to di flinguiih between true religion and falfe, and to caufe the dif ference betw een them evidently to appear. Hence they are called by the name of trzals, in the verk nextly preceding the text, and in innumerable other places: they try the faith and religion of profeflors, of what fort it is, as apparent gold 18 tried 1n the fire, and manifefted, whether it be true gold or no. And the faith of true Chriflians being thus tried and proved to be true, is found to praife, ' and honour, andglory; as in that preceding verfe.
