Import Duties. DERECHOS DE IMPORTACIÓN DEL URUGUAY. The collection of duties in Uruguay is based upon the official valuation of the various articles of merchandise established by a commission composed of the Director-General of Customs, the collector, inspectors, and an equal number of merchants, and two manufacturers selected by the Minister of the Treasury from those licensed and engaged in active business. The general rate of duty imposed is 31 per cent on the official valuation, but certain articles are taxed at the rates of 8, 12, 20, 44, 48, and 51 per cent on the same valuation. There are also a few articles which are subject to a specific rate of duty irrespective of their value and other articles which are admitted free. Articles not included in the tariff are valued by the customs officers taking articles on deposit as the basis of valuation. The metric system of weights and measures is required to be used in making out invoices and other custom-house papers. In the following pages the Uruguay gold dollar is valued at $1.034 in United States currency, that being the valuation estimated by the Director of the Mint of the United States in pursuance with requirements of law, but this estimate will, of course, vary according to the price of silver. Following are the principal equivalents appearing in the tariff: i kilogram 2. 2 pounds. • 3937 inch. = 15. 4323 grains. I quart. 2. 83 bushels. SECCIÓN PRIMERA. EFECTOS DE ALMACÉN. Derecho.
