Be not difcouraged if you cannot fill up all spaces with regular devotion, or with intenfe meditation between the prayer of confecration and the time of receiving the bread and wine; in this cofe do as well as you can: remember your ovun offences with as much forreas as you can, and the mercies of God to you in Chrift Jefus, with as much love, joy, and gratitude; recommend to God's mercy your parents, relations, friends, and all the world. Do any thing that is good and proper to fill up the time; and leave the reft to God, who is a bounteous rewarder of them that feek him.

Or when the prayer of confecration is over, if you have time before the bread and wine are brought to you, ufe the following prayer. A prayer immediately after the confecration of the bread and wine.

I will offer to thee the facrifice of thanksgiving: and will call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows unto the Lord, in the fight of all his people; in the courts of the Lord's houfe, even in the midft of thee, O Jerufalem, praise the Lord. Pfalm cxvi. 14, 15, 16.

Now, O.my God, proftrate before thine

altar, I dare not fo much as look upon this mystery of our falvation, if thou hadst not invited me: I befeech thee therefore, accept of this representation we make before

thee of that all-fufficient facrifice, which thy Son our Saviour Jefus Chrift made upon the crofs: let the merit of it plead effectually for the pardon and forgiveness of all my fins, and render thee favourable and propitious to me a miferable finner; let the power of it prevail against all the powers of darknefs; let the wifdom of it make me wife unto falvation; and - let the peace of it reconcile me unto thee, and bring to me peace of confcience.

And then, O bleffed Jefus my redeemer, I fhall be enabled to adore thee, who didft endure the painful and fhameful death of the crofs, to recover me from the state of fin and mifery: I admire thine infinite condefcenfion, who was pleased to be made miferable, that I might be made happy; poor, that I might be enriched; and didit die that I might live for ever. ¶Then fhall the minister first receive the communion in both kinds himself, and then proceed to deliver the fame to the bishops, priefts, and deacons in like manner, (if any be prefent) and after that to the people alfo in order, into their hands, all meekly kneeling.

The first person that receives is the minifter, who has a requeft to you in behalf of himself, namely, that as he prays for you with great fervency, you would comfort and encourage him with an hearty Amen upon your knees, to the petitions at his taking the holy ele ments: and in the interval between his receiving the bread and wine, ufe the following prayer.

Let thy priefts be cloathed with righteoufnefs: and let thy faints fing with joyfulness. Pfalm cxxxii. 9.

Ive thy grace, O Lord, we humbly befeech

thee, to all those who are called to any office or adminiftration in thy church; and fo replenish them with the truth of thy doctrine, and endue them with innocency of life, that they may faithfully ferve before thee, to the glory of thy great name and benefit of thy holy church, thro' Jefus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ritual grace, the body and blood of thy fon Jefus Chrift, that fo all carnal affections may die in me, and that all things belonging to the spirit may live and grow in me; that I may have power and ftrength, and victory, to triumph against the world, the flesh, and the devil; and alfo may be endued will all fuch heavenly virtues which are pleafing to thee, and which thou wilt eternally reward, for the merit of thy fon's death; to whom with the father and the holy ghost, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

Another

prayer juft before receiving the confecrated bread, if time will permit.

If thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there remembereft that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way, first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.. Matt. v. 23, 24.

ET it be thy pleasure, O God, to work in me whatfoever is wanting to fit me for thy divine acceptance, and a worthy receiving of these holy myfteries; give me repentance unto life, not to be repented of; endue me with a lively faith, a perfect love, and an universal charity; pity my weakness, and forgive my infirmities, that I may worthily receive these elements of bread and wine to my fupport and comfort in this life, and my eternal happiness in that which is to come. Amen.

Directions.

When the minifter is drawing near you, and before you receive the bread, fix your thoughts upon Jefus Chrift dying for the fins of the world.

The body of our Lord Jefus Chrift, which was given to give you the confecrated bread for thee, preferve thy body and wine, I would have you very and foul unto everlafting life. intent upon what you are about; Take and eat this in remembut take great heed, left while you brance that Chrift died for are friving to raise your heart, thee, and feed on him in thy your thoughts. Strive rather for a you be not loft and bewildered in heart by faith with thanks-ferious and compofed mind; let giving. your devotion be rather regular and equal, than exalted and transported; attend gravely to what the minifter fays; and when he has repeated that excellent prayer"The body of our Lord Jefus Chrift, which was given for thee, "preferve thy body and foul unto everlasting life." be fure you fay foftly a most hearty Amen; for is not that the thing you come for and defire?
