LOCAL AND PERSONAL.

At the first opening of County Court Chambers in Vancouver, B.C., after the recent death of His Honour Judge Schultz, His Honour Judge McInnis, on behalf of the bench, and Mr. Martin Griffin, on behalf of the bar, expressed in eloquent and feeling terms the regret felt by both at the loss they had thus sustained, and paid a warm tribute to the lovable characteristics of the late judge.

Avery Casey, K.C., L. L. Dawson, and E. B. Hutcherson, formerly associated with the firm of Balfour, Casey & Co., of Regina, Sask., have formed a new firm of Casey, Dawson, and Hutcherson, to carry on the practice of law in that city.

Alexander B. Macintosh, of Humboldt, Sask., has been appointed Judge of the District Court of the Judicial District of Battleford, vice Hon. James F. McLean, deceased.

Barclay Webster, K.C., Kentville, N.S., has been appointed Judge of the County Court for District No. 4, comprising the counties of Kings, Hants, and Colchester, vice Judge Chipman, resigned.

Glyn Osler, of the firm of Blake, Lash, Anglin and Cassels, has been appointed Ontario Registrar under the Military Service Act.

It is still undecided whether law students enrolled at Osgoode Hall, if drafted for active service under the Compulsory Military Service Act, will be granted a refund of fees and their year. The matter will come up before Convocation on October 18th.

Hon. Daniel MacNeill, K.C., of Inverness, N.C., has been appointed County Court Judge for the District of Antigonish.

Hugh St. Quintin Cayley, of Vancouver, B.C., has been appointed Senior Judge of the County Court of Vancouver, vice Judge McInnes, resigned.

His Honour Judge Ruggles, of Vancouver, has been appointed Junior Judge of the County Court of Vancouver, vice Judge Schultz, deceased.

Thomas J. Blain, barrister-at-law, Regina, Sask., has been appointed Judge of the Judicial District of Melville.

Miss Jean Cairns, barrister-at-law, of Toronto, has been appointed vice-president of the Women Lawyers' Association, for the province of Ontario.

George W. Allan, K.C., of Winnipeg, has been appointed assistant to C. A. Magrath, the Federal fuel controller, to advise the latter in respect to the fuel situation in Manitoba.

E. Leo Carter, of St. Johns, Nfd., has been appointed City Solicitor at St. Johns.

C. H. Hutchings, K.C., of St. Johns, Nfd., has been appointed Inspector-General of Constabulary.

Frank J. Morris, K.C., of St. Johns, Nfd., has been appointed Magistrate of the Central District Court.

P. J. Summers, barrister-at-law, of St. Johns, Nfd., has been appointed Deputy-Minister of Justice.

We regret to see the following deaths reported since our last issue:1

His Honour Archibald Bell, formerly Senior Judge of the County of Kent, at Chatham, on 7th ult.

His Honour Judge Ulric Lafontaine, of the Police Court and Court of Sessions, Montreal, at Montreal, on or about 6th ult.

R. C. Smith, K.C., one of the leaders of the Montreal bar (of whom we hope to publish a special obituary notice in our November issue), at Montreal, on 22nd ult.

George W. Baker, K.C., of Winnipeg, at Keewatin Beach, on 1st ult.

It is almost impossible to prevent occasional inaccuracies in the obituary column of the C. L. T. Corrections will be always gratefully received and duly recorded in our next issue.-Ed. C. L. T.

Hon. A. D. Richard, K.C., Registrar of Deeds, Dorchester, N.B., at Dorchester, on 14th ult.

David A. Swayze, eldest son of His Honour Judge Swayze, of Lindsay, cadet in the Royal Flying Corps, who graduated from Osgoode Hall last spring, was killed 6th inst. at Camp Borden, as a result of an accident to his machine.
