FRIENDS AND BROTHERS:-Conforming to the requirements of our Constitution, the Grand International Division of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers are here assembled for the purpose of holding their Tenth Annual Convention. The place of our meeting, the warm reception given us by the officials and people of this beautiful city, the intelligent and apparently happy company here assembled, all lend an interest to make this occasion surpass any former meeting of our Brotherhood. It cannot be said that our organization failed for want of en. couragement, for our Delegates receive every courtesy possible on their journeys to and from Conventions, and they are met at the opening meeting with words of welcome, and by the presence of influential friends that bid them God speed in the good work they have begun. No society ever had greater cause for thankfulness than the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and I do not know of any better way to show our apprecia No. 11. tion of the many favors and high honors we have received than to use our utmost endeavors to improve the condition of our organization, and thus make it every way worthy of the confidence and respect that is being continually conferred upon it by the whole public. Our progress during the past year has been rapid. We now number 172 SubDivisions with a total membership of over 9,500 members. Our finances are in an excellent condition, the total receipts during the year have been $21,641.34 the total expenses (including about $8,000.00 dispensed as charities) during the year have been $23,287.11 this with $31,448.87 cash on hand at the commencement of the year leaves total cash on hand, October 1, 1873 $29,803.10. Our JOURNAL has been well patronized, affording a net income of $6,396.91. We regard it as a high compliment to our little JOURNAL to say that it receives a liberal patronage outside of is ar organization, and the means thus put into our hands has made the heart of many a widow and orphan glad. We appreciate the patronage and assistance of our friends in aiding our resources for charitable objects, and in return we can only renew our pledges of fidelity to the trusts reposed in us. |
