This Illustrated Altar Book has been undertaken in compliance with a request made by the late much lamented Mr. Mowbray shortly before his death. The idea of it was suggested by Mr. Dermer's "Plain Communion Book," as will be apparent to any one acquainted with that book. It was thought that there is room for a Book somewhat fuller, and for young persons more advanced. The woodcuts are, with a few exceptions, the same as are in Mr. Dermer's Book, or such as have from time to time appeared in other publications by Mr. Mowbray. The Compiler has had but to adopt them, and to try so to appropriate them as it is hoped they may be found instructive to those for whom the Book is intended. He takes this opportunity of thanking Mr. Dermer for his Book, which has been proved to be very useful.
