"O come, let us worship and fall down, and kneel before the Lord our

Maker."
Psalm xcv. 6.

[graphic][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small]

THOU most sweet and loving Lord, Whom I now desire to receive with all devotion, Thou knowest mine infirmities, and the necessities which I endure; in how great evils and sins I am involved; how often I am weighed down, tempted, disturbed, and defiled by them. Unto Thee I come for remedy, I entreat of Thee consolation and support.

I speak to Thee, Who knowest all things, to Whom all my inward thoughts are open, and Who alone canst perfectly comfort and help me.

The Sacrifice and the Communion.

Thou knowest what good things I stand in most need of, and how poor I am in all virtue.

Behold, I stand before Thee poor and naked, calling for grace, and imploring mercy.

Refresh Thy hungry supplicant, inflame my coldness with the fire of Thy love, enlighten my blindness with the brightness of Thy Presence.

Lift up my heart to Thee in Heaven, and send me not away to wander over the earth.

[blocks in formation]

"Hear me, O Lord Jesus Christ, my Lord and my God, out of Thy holy dwelling place, from the glorious Throne of Thy Kingdom, and come and sanctify me, Who sittest above with the Father, and art here invisibly present; and by Thy mighty Hand make me worthy to partake of Thy spotless Body and Precious Blood."-Liturgy of S. Chrysostom.

On no

If the place for kneeling be fully occupied, kneel down behind those communicating, or stand with head bowed down. account push for a place, lest you disturb the Communicants.

When the Priest delivers the Sacrament of the Lord's Body, receive It into the palm of your right hand resting on your left hand; taking care that not a crumb falls to the ground.

When the Priest delivers the Sacrament of the Lord's Blood, receive the Chalice gently, but firmly, with both hands, taking a little and very carefully. You may not wipe the lip either with handkerchief or with hand, for it is not reverent to do so.*

At reception kneel with the body upright for convenience.

* Saint Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem, A.D. 347, gives the following direction to Communicants in his days: :

66

Approaching, therefore, to the Communion of the Holy Mysteries, come not with thy wrists extended, or thy fingers open; but make thy left hand as if a throne for thy right, which is on the eve of receiving the King. And having hollowed thy palm receive the Body of Christ, saying after it, Amen. Then, after having hallowed thine eyes by the touch of the Holy Body, partake thereof; giving heed lest thou lose any of It; for what thou losest is a loss to thee as it were from one of thine own members. For, tell me, if any one gave thee gold dust, wouldst thou not with all precaution keep it fast, being on thy guard against losing any of it, and suffering loss? How much more cautiously, then, wilt thou observe that not a crumb falls from thee of what is more precious than gold and precious stones. Then, after having partaken of the Body of Christ, approach also to the Cup of His Blood; not stretching forth thine hands, but bending, and saying in the way of worship and reverence, Amen, be thou hallowed by partaking also of the Blood of Christ."
