2 How could they sounds of gladness frame In desolation's mournful hour,

Or how exalt Jehovah's name

To those who never knew his power? 3 Thus while their harps in silence hung Beside the Babylonian wave,

They left Jehovah's name unsung, And waited for his power to save. 4 Now Zion lift thy weeping eyes, Adorn thy head with native palm, And bid thy wounded daughters rise, And gather Gilead's healing balm. 5 Resume thy harp, renown'd of old, And sing what Bethl'hem's shepherds heard, When at the birth thy seers foretold, A joyful host from heav'n appear'd, 6 Mark how th' evangelic page Opening its folded leaves to thee, With thine preserv'd from age to age, Combines in clearest harmony.

7 Enjoy the privileges given

In earlier times to thee and thine,
Pledges and promises of heav'n,
The tokens of regard divine,

8 The ark of God's directing laws
The Christian in his bosom bears,
And thence divine instruction draws
To guide him thro' a world of snares,
9 The heav'nly mercy seat" he brings,
Where'er his varying footsteps move;
While o'er it smile, with outstretch'd wings
The cherub forms of peace and love.
30. Fragment from Heber's Palestine.
ALEM shall rise !---but not by war restor'd,
Not built in murder---planted by the sword;
Yet, Salem! thou shalt rise! thy Father's aid
Shall heal the wound his chast'ning hand has
made;

Shall judge the proud oppressor's ruthless sway,
And burst his brazen bonds,& cast his cords away.
Then on your tops shall deathless verdure spring,
Break forth, ye mountains, and ye valleys sing!
No more your thirsty rocks shall frown forlorn,
Th' unbeliever's jest, the heathen's scorn:
The sultry sands shall tenfold harvests yield
And a new Eden deck the thorny field.
E'en now, perchance, wide waving o'er the land,
That mighty angel lifts his golden wand,
Courts the bright vision of descending power,
Tells ev'ry gate and measures every tow'r;
And chides the tardy seals that yet detain
Thy Lion, Judah! from his destin'd reign.
And who is He? the vast the awful form,
Girt with the whirlwind, sandal'd with the storm.
A western cloud around his limbs is spread,
His crown a rainbow, and a sun his head.
To highest heaven he lifts his kingly hand,
And treads at once the ocean and the land;
And hark! his voice amid the thunder's roar,
His dreadful voice! that time shall be no more!
Lo! cherub hands the golden courts prepare;
Lo! thrones arise, and every saint is there;
Earth's utmost bounds confess their awful sway,
The mountains worship and the isles obey;
Nor sun nor moon they need, nor day nor night,
God is their temple, and the Lamb their light:
And shall not Israel's sons exulting come,
Hail the glad beam, & claim their ancient home?
On David's throne shall David's offspring reign,
And the dry bones be warm with life again.
Hark! white-rob'd crowds their deep hosannas

raise,

And the hoarse flood repeats the sound of praise; Ten thousand harps attune the mystic song, Ten thousand thousand saints the sound pro long;--

"Worthy the Lamb! omnipotent to save, “Who died,---who lives! triumphant o'er the grave.

MISSIONARY HYMNS AND POEMS.

1. Psalm 60. [Ramoth Gilead. C. M.] HUS saith the Lord; " My Son shall reign "To earth's remotest bound;

THU

"I will his holy throne maintain

"And all his foes confound." 2 Arise, O God, thy strength display, Stretch forth thy conq'ring sword, O'er every land thy sceptre sway, And shed thy grace abroad.

3 Soon may the Gentile and the Jew
With one consent submit,

And men of every name and hue
Bow at Immanuel's feet.

4 Send forth thy Spirit with thy word
To every tribe and tongue;
Let all the nations praise the Lord
In one delightful song.

2. Acts. 4. 20.

WE have heard the joyful news;--

Now let others hear it!

Bear the tidings to the Jews,

T'all the nations bear it.
They who know the joyful sound
Never should conceal it,
But to all the world around
Far and wide. reveal it.

2 Joyful news the Gospel is,
And to thought confounding,
Wonder, O ye heavens at this,
Sing of grace abounding.
Grace like this was never known,
God our nature wearing!
Making human guilt his own,
And our sorrows bearing!

3 Spread abroad the joyful sound;
Fly in all directions;
Speak to men the world around,
Men of all complexions.
All are sinners, needing grace,
God's own word has said it.
Go with speed to ev'ry place,
And unwearied spread it.

4 And may He whose grace it is
Give the word a blessing!
Make the conquer'd nations his
Ev'ry ill redressing.
May he take the veil away

All the world o'erspreading!
And his mighty power display,
Every hope exceeding.

3. Christmas Missionary. [Portugal new. L. M.]
COME, thou long expected Jesus!
Born to set thy people free,

From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in thee.

2 Israel's strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth thou art;
True desire of every nation,-
Joy of every pious heart.
3 Born thy people to deliver;
Born a child and yet a king;
Born to reign in us for ever,
Now thy gracious kingdom bring.
4 By thine own Eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone :
By thine all-sufficient merit
Raise us to thy glorious throne.

4. "Come over and help us." [Hayden. L. M.]

HA

ARK! what mean those lamentations
Rolling sadly through the sky?

'Tis the cry of heathen nations, "Come and help us or we die." *Hear the heathen's sad complaining, Christians! hear their dying cry; And, the love of Christ constraining, Join to help them ere they die.

Good Friday. [Bath Acoricola. L. M.]

“'TIS

IS finish'd!" so the Saviour cried,
And meekly bow'd his head and died
"'Tis finish'd!"-Yes, the race is run,
The battle fought, the vict'ry won.
""Tis finish'd!"-Aaron now no more
Must stain his robe with purple gore ;
The sacred veil is rent in twain,
And Jewish rites no more remain.
“ 'Tis finish'd ;”--this my dying groan,
Shall sins of ev'ry kind atone,

Millions shall be redeem'd from death
By this my last expiring breath.

"'Tis finish'd!-Heav'n is reconcil'd!
And all the pow'rs of darkness spoil'd!
Peace, love and happiness again
Return and dwell with sinful men.

5 “'Tis finish'd!-let the joyful sound
Be heard through all the nations round;
"'Tis finish'd!"-let the echo fly

Thro' Heav'n and hell, thro' earth and sky.

6. Psalm 72. [New Sabbath. L. M.]

ESUS shall reign where'er the sun

JE

Does his successive journeys run: His kingdom stretch from shore to shore "Till inoons shall wax and wane no more. 2 To him shall endless prayer be made, And princes throng to crown his head: His name like sweet perfume shall rise With every morning sacrifice.
