THIS selection is made in the hope of exciting more general feeling for the spiritual wants of above 800 million of the human race.

For the 200 million who profess Christianity there are yet provided but 6 million Bibles: whilst to the remainder, all the societies together send but 512 missionaries. And to the 12 million of that people to whose Fathers we owe all our Christian knowledge, consolation and hopes, there are but 7 missionaries and 6000 Hebrew new Testaments sent. -How truly did an inspired writer say, "The whole world lieth in wickedness!"-Do we believe that the Day-spring from on high has visited Judah in order to give light to them that sit in darkness and the shadow of death? Will any refuse to help these societies who desire to "know that themselves have passed from death unto life by their love of the brethren."

If the aggregate population of the globe be 895,300,000 souls, and we reckon with the ancients that a generation lasts 30 years, then 81,760 drop into eternity every day, or about 56 every minute. —Arise, Christians! to the work of faith and labor of love with patience of hope; knowing that your labor shall not be in vain in the Lord. Arise! while with you it is called to day—and whatever your hand findeth to do, do it with all your might, before the grave closes upon you, where there is no 1 work nodevice, nor knowledge, nor wisdom ;-nor repentance

To the Holy Ghost. [Birbeck. P. M.]

REATOR Spirit! by whose aid

CRE

The world's foundations first were laid;
Come, visit ev'ry humble mind,
And pour thy joys on all mankind.
From sin and sorrow set us free,
And make us temples fit for thee.

2 Hail! source of uncreated light
Illumine our beclouded sight,
Thrice holy fount, immortal fire,
Our hearts with heavenly love inspire;
Come, and thy sacred unction bring
To sanctify us while we sing.

3 Plenteous of grace, descend from high,
Rich in thy seven fold energy;

Thou strength of his almighty hand
Whose power doth heaven and earth command,
Refine and purge our earthly parts
And stamp thine image on our hearts.

4 Create all new, our wills controul,
Subdue the rebel in our soul;
Make us eternal truths receive,
And practice all that we believe.
And lest again we go astray,
Protect and guide us in the way.

5 Immortal honor, endless fame
Attend the Almighty Father's name;
The Saviour Son be glorified

Who for lost man's redemption died;
And equal adoration be

Eternal Comforter! to thee.

PART THE FIRST.

HYMNS ON THE BIBLE.

1. Light and glory of the Word. [Ling. C. M.]

TH

HE Spirit breathes upon the word
And brings the truth to sight;

Precepts and promises afford

A sanctifying light.

2 A glory gilds the sacred page,
Majestic like the sun;

It gives a light to every age,
It gives, but borrows none.

3 The hand that gave it still supplies
The gracious light and heat:
His truths upon the nations rise,
They rise, but never set.

4 Eternal thanks, Oh Lord! be thine
For such a bright display

As makes a world of darkness shine
With beams of heav'nly day.

5 My soul rejoices to pursue

The steps of him I love;
Till glory breaks upon my view
In brighter worlds above.

2. The Word precious. [Zion Chapel. P. M.] PRECIOUS Bible! what a treasure

Does the word of God afford!

All I want for life or pleasure,
Food and med'cine, shield and sword.
Let the world account me poor,
Having this I need no more.
