Q. Did you ever see that ticket before, which Mr. Peelle just handed you, voted for Franklin Landers?-A. I could not say.

Q. Do you know who printed that ticket?-A. I believe I printed that ticket. Q. I call your attention to Exhibit Z, already shown you, to Mr. Wildman's deposition, headed "Democratic ticket," with a flag on it, for Franklin Landers; do you recollect that "flag ticket," as it is called?—A. No, sir; I never saw that before to-day. Q. Did you ever see this other ticket Mr. Peelle showed you, Exhibit No. 4 to your own deposition, headed "Democratic ticket" for Franklin Landers?-A. That kind of a ticket; yes, sir.

Q. What ticket is that?-A. That was in the year Shanklin and Landers run, two years ago.

Q. It was used in 1880, was it?-A. Yes, sir; I say Mr. Landers ran then.

Q. Did you print that ticket with a flag on it?-A. No, sir.

Q. Do you recollect what time of day you got that smaller ticket out, which is marked as an exhibit to your deposition?-A. That I could not say; it has been so long ago that I could not remember that.

Q. Do you know which ticket was used on the day of the election, principally?—A. I suppose this [indicating] must be, because I never saw the flag ticket before to-day. Q. When you say "this ticket," you mean Exhibit No. 4 to your own deposition?— A. Yes, sir.

Direct examination by Mr. WILSON:

Q. Your name, age, and residence.-A. John J. Curtis; age 27; residence 39 Ash street, Indianapolis, Ind.

Q. What is your politics ?—A. I am a Republican.

Q. What is your business?-A. I am connected with Bowen, Stewart & Co., booksellers and paper dealers, and I have charge of the paper department there.

Q. I call your attention to a ticket marked Exhibit No. 1, to the deposition of John Carlon and headed "Republican ticket," for governor Albert T. Porter, and I will ask you to please state what that ticket is printed upon?

(Objected to as not rebuttal.)

A. I would call that a cheap flat paper.

Q. What is flat paper -A. Flat paper is writing paper; paper finished for writing on with ink.

Q. I call your attention to Exhibit No. 4 to the deposition of John Carlon headed "Democratic ticket," for governor Franklin Landers. Tell me, please, what material that ticket is printed on 7-A. That is No. 2 book-a cheap grade of book paper. Q. I call your attention to Exhibit No. 2 to John Carlon's deposition headed Democratic Ticket," with a flag on it, and for Franklin Landers for governor, and I will ask you what material that is printed on ?-A. I would call that a book paper. Q. What number; do you know -A. It is a better grade than the other; I do not think it comes for a better grade than No. 2 paper, though.

Q. I call your attention to a ticket headed" Democratic Ticket," John G. Shanklin, and marked Exhibit No. 4 to the deposition of Mr. Ransdell, and I will ask you what material that is printed upon-That is No. 2 book.

Q. What is Exhibit S to Mr. Gordon's deposition headed "Democratic Ticket?' A. That is a book paper.

Q. What grade would you say that was 1-A. With the ticket folded up that way it is pretty hard to tell whether it is a No. 1 or a No. 2. I would call that a good grade of No. 2. It should be perfectly smooth to tell.

Q. I call your attention to a ticket headed "Democratic ticket" for Winfield Scott Hancock, marked Exhibit E to the deposition of William Wallace; I will ask you what is that material, if you know, upon which that ticket is printed ?-A That is book paper.

Q. Do you know the number of that; could you tell what number of book paper that is?-A. I cannot tell, it is so soiled. It looks like a good No. 2.

Q. I hand you a ticket headed "Republican ticket," and marked Exhibit F to the deposition of William Wallace, and voted for James A. Garfield for President and Chester A. Arthur for Vice-President; what is the material on which that ticket is printed? And I also hand you Exhibit No. 3 to the deposition of John Carlon headed Republican ticket," national campaign, James A. Garfield, and you can compare the two; one of them is fresh and the other is soiled; and I hand you this ticket marked Exhibit No. 3 to the deposition of D. M. Ransdell, for secretary of state Isaac S. Moore.-A. I believe I would call that a flat paper. This sample is so folded that I would have to compare them to see if they were the same ticket.

Q. And I now hand you the ticket marked Exhibit No. 3 to deposition of D. M. Ransdell, for secretary of state, Isaac S. Moore, and Exhibit 6 to the deposition of Henry C. Adams, headed "Republican ticket," for secretary of state, Emanuel R. Hawn, and I will ask you to take the Republican tickets you just looked at, and state what difference there is, if any, in the bulk and quality of those four tickets; and in specifying, please name them as Exhibits so and so. I ask you as to the bulk and thickness of these tickets, how do they differ?-A. There is considerable difference in the paper used.

Q. How about it as compared with the Democratic tickets-the four which I have shown you; is there more difference between the Democratic tickets or more difference between the Republican tickets, respectively 1-A. There is more difference in the weight of these Republican tickets; they vary in weight.

Q. How do the Republican tickets compare as to uniformity in width ?—A. There are two of them about the same width, and there is a little over one-eighth of an inch difference between one of them and the others.

Q. Two of them correspond substantially in weight-A. Yes, sir.

Q. As to the finish-the sizing-how do they compare?- A. Two of them are a flat paper finish.

Q. What is a flat paper finish ?—A. An extra hard finish to use for writing paper, to write with ink.

Q. That gives it what is popularly termed a glazed finish ?-A. Yes, sir.

Q. What two are those?-A. Exhibit No. 3.

Q. That is, the national ticket for Garfield for President 1-A. Yes, sir.

Q. And the State ticket for Governor Porter in 1880↑—A. Yes, sir.
