MR. PRESIDENT: Your Committee on Ways and Means, to whom was referred House bill No. 979, An act making an appropriation for the payment of compensation and expenses for making examinations of insurance companies under chapter 357 of the Session Laws of 1901, have had the same under consideration, and instruct me to report the bill back to the Senate, with the recommendation that it be passed.

Also, House bill No. 990, An act to provide revenue for the fiscal years ending June 30, 1904, and June 30, 1005, and instruct me to report the bill back to the Senate, with the recommendation that it be passed. JNO. T. CHANEY, Chairman.

MR. PRESIDENT: I am directed by the House to inform the Senate that the House has granted the request for a conference committee on House bill No. 223. Conferees on part of the House, Messrs. O'Donnell, Peck, Bucklin.

MR. PRESIDENT: I am directed by the House to inform the Senate that the House has adopted report of conference committee on

House bill No. 992, An act to amend sections 1 and 2 and 4 of chapter 286 of the Session Laws of 1901, and to repeal the sections amended.

Also, adopted report of conference committee on House bill No. 30, substitute for House bill No. 30, An act supplemental to and amendatory of "An act in relation to the Louisiana Purchase Centennial Exposition, to be held in St. Louis in 1903, and to provide for the collection, arrangement and display of materials showing the products and resources of the state of Kansas at such exposition, and making an appropriation therefor," approved March 2, 1901, and extending the time of said commission and the drawing of the unexpended balance heretofore appropriated, authorizing the president and secretary of said commission to administer oaths in certain cases, and making an additional appropriation for said exposition. MR. PRESIDENT: I am directed by the House to inform the Senate that the House has passed House bill No. 822, An act making appropriation for and to provide for the payment of a deficiency arising in the administration of the duties of the State Board of Medical Registration and Examination for the fiscal years ending June 30, 1901, and June 30, 1902.

Also, passed House bill No. 552, An act for the appropriation of interest received during the fiscal years ending 30, 1904, and June 30, 1905, from the permanent fund of the Kansas State Agricultural College.

Also, passed House bill No. 658, An act to amend sections 7, 26, 31, 37, 41, 46 and 64 of chapter 353 of the Session Laws of 1901, being an act relating to charities and charitable and reformatory institutions, repealing said original sections, also sections 44 and 45 of said act.

Also, passed House bill No. 232, An act to provide for the deposit of public funds now in the state treasury, or that may hereafter be paid into the state treasury, in the banks or banking institutions of the state, and providing penalties for the violation of certain provisions, and repealing all acts and parts of acts in conflict therewith.

Also, passed House bill No. 715, An act to amend an act entitled "An act relating to trust companies, defining their powers and duties, providing for their management, control, and supervision, and providing penalties for violation of the provisions of this act," approved March 2, 1901, and repealing section 2 of chapter 407 of the Laws of Kansas of 1901.

PRESIDENT: I am directed by the House to inform the Senate that the House has passed House bill No. 932, An act making appropriations for the industrial department of the Western University, at Quindaro, Kan., for the fiscal years ending June 30, 1904, and June 30, 1905, and to provide for fee to be charged to non-resident students.

Also, passed House bill No. 933, An act to provide for the payment of law-books furnished the justices of the supreme court.

Also, passed House bill No. 934, An act vacating Williston's addition to Manhattan, Riley county, Kansas, and also the streets and blocks thereof.

Also, passed House bill No. 726, An act making appropriation to reimburse Harriet L. Waugh, one of the Quantrill raid sufferers.

Also amended, and passed as amended, Senate bill No. 86, An act to amend section 1 of chapter 102 of the Session Laws of 1901, entitled "An act providing for the organization, regulation and dissolution of corporations for the establishment and maintenance of cemeteries in or adjacent to cities of the first class having a population of over 50,000 inhabitants."

REPORTS OF STANDING COMMITTEES.

Senator Codding, chairman of the Committee on State Affairs, offered the following report:

MR. PRESIDENT: Your Committee on State Affairs, to whom was referred House bill No. 903, An act to provide for the repairing and rebuilding of the bridge across the Kansas river between Douglas and Leavenworth counties upon the site of said bridge as now located at Eudora, authorizing the board of county commissioners of Douglas county, Kansas, and the board of county commissioners of Leavenworth county, Kansas, to provide funds to pay for the same, have had the same under consideration, and instruct me to report the bill back to the Senate with the recommendation that it be not passed. Senate bill No. 563, An act making appropriation for the state printer for the fiscal years ending June 30, 1904, and June 30, 1905, and regulating the expenditure thereof, was read the third time.

House amendments to Senate bill No. 563 were as follows:

Representative Francis moved to amend the title to read: "An act making appropriation for the state printer for the fiscal years ending June 30, 1904, and June 30, 1905, and regulating the expenditure thereof." In section 2,

lines 3 and 4, after the word "requisitions," insert the words "upon the state printer." In line 6, after the word "printing," insert "book-making and binding." Strike out all after the word "issue," at end of section 2. In section 3, line 9, after the word "printer," strike out "or contractor or contractors." In line 3, section 5, after the word "ordered," strike out "and by whom done." Strike out all of section 6 and make original section 7 read section 6, which amendments were adopted.

The question being, Shall the bill pass? the roll was called, with the following result: Yeas 26, nays 4; absent or not voting, 10.

Senators voting in favor of the passage of the bill were: Allen, Branine, Buschow, Caldwell, Carpenter, Chaney, Codding, Conrad, Crum, Findlay, Fitzpatrick, Fulton, Gabriel, Hurrel, Kennedy, Miller, Morehouse, Morrow, Pestana, Porter, Simons, Sponable, Tapp, Ward, White, and Wulfekuhler.

Senators voting in the negative were: McMillan, Peterson, Stewart, and Wright.

Senator Morehouse moved that the Senate concur in the House amendments to Senate bill No. 223.

The motion did not prevail.

Senator Morehouse moved that the Senate ask for a conference on said House amendments to Senate bill No. 223.

The motion prevailed, and the chair appointed as a conference committee on the part of the Senate on Senate bill No. 223 Senators Morehouse and Branine.

REPORTS OF CONFERENCE COMMITTEES.

MR. PRESIDENT: We, the conference committee appointed by the Senate and House, do recommend that the House amendment to Senate bill No. 223 be stricken out.
