California celery meets with limited competition from other sections. of the country. The holiday shipments for November and December encounter some competition from New York and Michigan storage stock and the carlot movement in February and March overlaps with shipments from Florida. On the whole, however, as will be noted from figure 4, California celery enjoys an enviable position, in so far as its marketing period is concerned.

About a third of the celery produced in the United States is grown in California. New York, Michigan, Florida, Ohio and New Jersey are practically the only other states producing celery in commercial quantities, although there is a limited acreage in Colorado and Pennsylvania. Table 1 shows the acreage planted to celery in California during the past four years as compared with that in the other leading producing

territories in the United States, and figure 5 illustrates the percentage of the total crop produced in the country credited to each of the eight leading celery states in the Union.
