He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down : He fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not. All flesh is grass, And all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: upon it: But the word of our God shall stand for ever. P. We all do fade as a leaf; And our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. M. There is no man that hath power Over the spirit to retain the spirit; Neither hath he power in the day of death: And there is no discharge in that war. * Biblical Liturgy, No. 20. What man is he that liveth, And shall not see death? It is appointed unto men once to die, P. For we must needs die, And are as water spilt on the ground, And sojourners, as were all our fathers; And there is none abiding. When a few years are come, Then I shall go the way whence I shall not return, Even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death: A land of darkness as darkness itself; And of the shadow of death, without any order; And where the light is as darkness. There the wicked cease from troubling; And there the weary be at rest. There the prisoners rest together; P. The small and great are there : And the servant is free from his master. When the glory of his house is increased; His glory shall not descend after him. And it is certain we can carry nothing out. |
