For there the Lord commanded the blessing,

Even life for evermore.

XXXII. THE ASPECTS OF DEATH.*

M. Man that is born of a woman

Is of few days, and full of trouble.

He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down :

He fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

All flesh is grass,

And all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:

The grass withereth, the flower fadeth:
Because the Spirit of the Lord bloweth
Surely the people is grass.

The grass withereth, the flower fadeth:

upon it:

But the word of our God shall stand for ever.

P. We all do fade as a leaf;

And our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

M. There is no man that hath power

Over the spirit to retain the spirit;

Neither hath he power in the day of death:

And there is no discharge in that war.

* Biblical Liturgy, No. 20.

What man is he that liveth,

And shall not see death?

It is appointed unto men once to die,
But after this the judgment.

P. For we must needs die,

And are as water spilt on the ground,
Which cannot be gathered up again :
Neither doth God respect any person.
M. We are strangers before Thee,

And sojourners, as were all our fathers;
Our days on earth are as a shadow,

And there is none abiding.

When a few years are come,

Then I shall go the way whence I shall not return,

Even to the land of darkness and the shadow of

death:

A land of darkness as darkness itself;

And of the shadow of death, without any order;

And where the light is as darkness.

There the wicked cease from troubling;

And there the weary be at rest.

There the prisoners rest together;
They hear not the voice of the oppressor.

P. The small and great are there :

And the servant is free from his master.
M. Be not thou afraid when one is made rich,

When the glory of his house is increased;
For when he dieth, he shall carry nothing away;

His glory shall not descend after him.
As he came forth of his mother's womb,
Naked shall he return, to go as he came,
And shall take nothing of his labour,
Which he may carry in his hand.
P. We brought nothing into this world,

And it is certain we can carry nothing out.
