He said, If Thou be the Son of God,
Command that these stones be made bread.
But He answered and said, It is written
Man shall not live by bread alone,

But by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

C. Then the devil taketh Him up into the holy city,

And setteth Him on a pinnacle of the temple,

M. And saith unto Him, If Thou be the Son of God,
Cast thyself down; for it is written,

He shall give his angels charge concerning Thee;
And in their hands they shall bear Thee up,
Lest at any time Thou dash thy foot against a stone.
P. Jesus said unto him, It is written,

Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

C. Again, the Devil taketh Him up into

An exceeding high mountain,

And showeth Him all the kingdoms of the world,
And the glory of them;

M. And saith unto Him,

All these things will I give Thee,

If Thou wilt fall down and worship me.

P. Then saith Jesus unto him,

Get thee hence, Satan; for it is written,
Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God,
And Him only shalt thou serve.

All. Then the Devil leaveth Him,

And, behold, angels came and ministered unto Him.

*Our Father who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

* Matt. vi. 9-13.

And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, Amen.

for ever.

V. REDEMPTION.

M. *Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the Lord, and spake, saying,

I will sing unto the Lord, for He hath triumphed gloriously;

The horse and his rider hath He thrown into the sea. P. The Lord is my strength and my song;

And He is become my salvation;

He is my God, and I will prepare Him a habitation,
My father's God, and I will exalt Him.

All. The Lord is a man of war:

The Lord is his name.

M. Pharaoh's chariot and his horse hath He cast into the

sea,

His chosen captains also are drowned in the Red Sea. P. The depths have covered them :

They sank into the bottom as a stone.

All. Thy right hand, O Lord, is become glorious in power; Thy right hand, O Lord, hath dashed in pieces the

enemy.

And in the greatness of thine excellency

Thou hast overthrown those that rose up against Thee: Thou sentest forth thy wrath,

Which consumed them as stubble.

And with the blast of thy nostrils

* Exodus xv. 1-19.

The waters were gathered together,
The floods stood upright as a heap,

And the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea. M. The enemy said, I will pursue,

I will overtake, I will divide the spoil;

My lust shall be satisfied upon them;

I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them.

P. Thou didst blow with thy wind, the sea covered

them;

They sank as lead in the mighty waters.

All. Who is like unto Thee, O Lord, among the gods?
Who is like Thee, glorious in holiness,
Fearful in praises, doing wonders?
Thou stretchedst out thy right hand,

The earth swallowed them.

M. Thou, in thy mercy, hast led forth the people which Thou hast redeemed;

Thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy

habitation.

C. The people shall hear and be afraid;

Sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestine ; Then the Dukes of Edom shall be amazed;

The mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold of them;

All the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.

Fear and dread shall fall upon them;

By the greatness of thy arm, they shall be as still as

a stone;

Till thy people pass over, O Lord,

Till the people pass over, whom Thou hast purchased. M. Thou shalt bring them in,

And plant them in the mountain of thine inherit

ance,

In the place, O Lord, which Thou hast made for Thee to dwell in,

In the sanctuary, O Lord, which thy hands have established.

P. The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.

All. For the horse of Pharoah went in

With his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea; And the Lord brought again the waters of the sea upon them :

But the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea.

*Give unto the Lord, O ye mighty,

Give unto the Lord glory and strength.

Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name ;

Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

The voice of the Lord is upon the waters;
The God of glory thundereth;

The Lord is upon many waters.

M. The voice of the Lord is powerful:
P. The voice of the Lord is full of majesty.
C. The voice of the Lord breaketh the cedars;
Yea, the Lord breaketh the cedars of Lebanon.
M. He maketh them also to skip like a calf:

Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn.

P. The voice of the Lord divideth the flames of fire.
C. The voice of the Lord shaketh the wilderness;
The Lord shaketh the wilderness of Kadesh.

M. The voice of the Lord maketh the hinds to calve,
And discovereth the forests;

P. And in his temple doth every one speak of his glory.
All. The Lord sitteth upon the flood;

Yea, the Lord sitteth King for ever.

The Lord will give strength unto his people;
The Lord will bless his people with peace.
M. +Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous;
P. For praise is comely for the upright.

* Psalm xxix.

+ Psalm xxxiii.

M. Praise the Lord with harp;

P. Sing unto Him with the psaltery, and an instrument

of ten strings.

C. Sing unto Him a new song:

Play skilfully with a loud noise.

All. For the word of the Lord is right;

And all his works are done in truth.

He loveth righteousness and judgment:

The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

M. By the word of the Lord were the heavens made;

P. And all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. C. He gathereth the waters of the sea together as a heap: He layeth up the depth in storehouses.

All. Let all the earth fear the Lord;

Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. M. For He spake,

C. And it was done;
M. He commanded,
C. And it stood fast.

M. The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought:

P. He maketh the devices of the people of none effect. All. The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever,

The thoughts of his heart to all generations.

M. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord: P. And the people whom He hath chosen for his inheritance.

M. The Lord looketh from heaven;

C. He beholdeth all the sons of men.

All. From the place of his habitation

He looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth. M. He fashioneth their hearts alike;

P. He considereth all their works.

M. There is no king saved by the multitude of a host: P. A mighty man is not delivered by much strength.
