392 L Dec. 23:3/1 Appleton's new illustrated AMERICAN CYCLOPEDIA, published by D. Appleton and Company of New York, is now being sold by an Appleton agent, B. S. Green, 268 Superior st. "This valuable work has now reached its eighth volume, and thus far the volumes issued have given the most complete satisfaction. Aside from its literary excellence, the numberless fine engravings and maps which appear in the works add greatly to its superiority, making a vast improvement over the last edition, which in its day had such an immense circulation." Bishop Littlejohn says, "If the volumes issued are samples of the series, it is a work of great value."

The first is ANIMAL MECHANISM by E. J. Marey, professor of the College of France. This book is a treatise on terrestrial and aerial locomotion. The next is the CONFLICT BETWEEN RELIGION AND SCIENCE, by Prof. John William Draper of New York. This volume is historical and follows the line of conflict between religion and science from the earliest ages down almost to Professor Tyndall's memorable address before the British association last summer.

418 L Jan. 1:7/4 - Albert Forby, a turner by trade, and Philip Knoll, a young butcher, were arrested while fighting in the saloon of Barney Curtin on Seneca st. last night.

Knoll had $123.25 on his person that he might have lost in the tussle. Forby, who is known to be a bad character, was recently discharged from the fire department for some misdemeanor.

420 L June 17:7/1 There was a row yesterday on the canal boat BURTON between Pat Ryan and Lewis Fye. The latter was knocked off the boat into the water, but came out with his ardor for the fray dampened.

An altercation between two butchers occurred yesterday at 15 Glass ave. The timely interference of outside persons prevented what promised to be a bloody affray.

421 L June 17:8/1 - The section of the city known as the "Island of Cuba" appears to be in a very bad way. The Bohemian settlement is the scene of frequent disturbances and cutting affrays. The attention of the fifth precinct police is frequently called to that neighborhood, and their efforts will doubtless result in an abatement of the nuisance if they are properly seconded by a little judicious severity in the police court.
