Weeks of Woodland ave. were arrested on information received by Coroner Miller that an abortion had been practiced on Mrs. Annie Wilson who lives in the New England block on Broadway. 2 L July 23:8/3 Mrs. Caroline Johnson died at the residence of her husband, 24 Mayflower st., on July 21, under circumstances which lead to suspicion that death was caused by an attempt at abortion. An inquest will probably be held today. (10) (2) 3 L July 24:7/3 - An inquest over the body of Caroline Johnson yesterday revealed that the deceased came to her death from an abortion produced by a person or persons unknown. See Theaters ACCIDENTS & DISASTERS L Jan. 3; ed: 4/1,2 See Homicides 4 L Jan. 3:8/1 Ferdinand Praul, 35, employed in Quayle and Son's shipyard, was driving a team through the yard yesterday. His horses became unmanageable. In attempting to stop them, he was dragged against a building and instantly killed. The body was taken to the residence at 14 Crown st. The wife survives. (3) L Jan. 5:7/5 - Moses Simmons' horse was hiched on Sterling ave. Jan. Some boys decided to take a ride, unhitched the animal, and started off. The horse got the best of them and ran away. Though the buggy was smashed, the boys were not hurt. Frank Everingham, four, of Barber ave., fell through a hatchway yesterday while playing at the Fuller and Warren Stove co. He died as a result of the injuries received. His father, Royce Everingham, was in the employ of the Stove co. (2) (7) 7 L Jan. 27:8/3 - While crossing the ice yesterday from Radcliffe's shipyard enroute to the steamer CITY OF SANDUSKY, Mr. Pillow, 28, of 56 Center st., was drowned when the ice gave way. The efforts of his companion, a Mr. Donahue, and two large Newfoundland dogs to save him were of no avail. 8 L Feb. 5:8/3 Mrs. Margaret Murray, 45, of 378 Detroit st., fell downstairs last evening and was severely injured. (2) 10 L Mar. 24:7/2 Julia Stedrowsky and Katy Vecerka were drowned on Mar. 22 when their boat capsized in the Cuyahoga river. With them were Frank Hanke and Frank Stedrowsky. (3) 11 Apr. 9:7/1 Joseph Gisher, ten, was run over by a runaway horse on Apr. 7. The boy's parents reside on the west side. (2) 12 L Apr. 10:7/1 Arthur J. Towne was critically injured yesterday while riding a velocipede to his place of business. In coming down Franklin st. hill, he attained such speed that after turning the corner into Columbus st. his velocipede became unmanageable, missed the railing at the bridge, and fell 25 feet. It is thought that he can live but a short time. (3) 13 L Apr. 14:4/4 W. J. Farrer, proprietor of a gun store on Superior 14 L Apr. 18:8/4 Edward Hosier, 15 Michigan st., an employe of Rose and Prentiss, yesterday was run over by a team near the post office and was severely injured. The driver's identity could not be learned. (3) (2) 15 L May 4:8/3 Thomas Levingston, 14, residing at 156 Vermont st., was instantly killed on May 2 by a piece of timber which fell from the derrick near the old river bed where he was playing. 16 L May 16:7/14 A Mr. Strouts was attacked on May 13 by a Newfoundland dog owned by a man living at 653 St. Clair st. Strouts' hand is so badly lacerated that it is feared he may never recover the use of it. (1) (2) 17 L May 18:5/3 John Foot's children, a boy and a girl, were playing in a boat on the canal at the foot of Eagle st. yesterday. The boat capsized, and the girl drowned before help could reach her. The boy, about nine years old, was saved, escaping death almost by a miracle. was swept through a 50 foot sewer pipe, which carries off the surplus water of the canal, and was discharged into the river, where he was rescued with very little injury. Kaiser is in a serious condition as a result of being thrown from his wagon yesterday when his horses became frightened at the rattle of furniture in the wagon. He has not regained consciousness, and it is feared he will not recover. Drs. Lupton and Soapp attended. (4) 20 - L June 8:5/3 Last night a little boy reported the probability of a drowned man in the canal to Sergeant Thompson, who went to verify the story. Clothing was discovered on the bank and in one of the pockets was a package of money amounting to $47.60 and various papers which showed conclusively that the drowned man was Alfred Gates, a Norwegian. It was supposed he was taken with a cramp while bathing. The body has not yet been recovered. (3) 21 L June 8:8/4 - John Asper, eight, was drowned June 5 while bathing in the river between the chemical works and the Jefferson st. bridge. 22 L June 13:8/1 The two-year-old daughter of William Roberts was drowned yesterday in a cistern near her parent's house at 72 Lawn st. (1) (1) 23 L June 15:7/1 The buggy of Thomas Graves overturned June 12 near the corner of Erie and Rockwell sts. The occupant was thrown out, and the horse was so badly injured that it will have to be killed. (1) 24 L June 15:7/1 Daniel Regan, who resides on Oregon st., fell from a ladder June 12 and broke his arm. 25 L June 16:7/1 C. M. Sturtevant and C. C. Burnett, while turning the corner of Custead and Euclid ave. in their buggy on June 13, were overturned when their horses became frightened and ran away. The men escaped without injury, but their vehicle was badly broken. (1) 26 L June 16:7/1 A little boy broke his leg and received other injuries when he fell from the gallery of the Saengerfest building on June 14. 27 L June 16:7/1 A Miss Read, residing on King st., fell on Lawrence st. on June 13 and broke her arm. (1) (1) 28 - L June 16:8/1 - Last evening Dr. Valentine Lammersman and August Nolze were in a rowboat about a half mile out on Lake Erie and attempted to change oars. Lammersman, in rising to his feet, capsized the boat, throwing both men into the water. Nolze succeeded in reaching the boat and clung to it until be was rescued, but Dr. Lammersman was drowned. Up to midnight his body had not been found. The deceased was a man about 28 years old and a physician of high standing. 29 L June 17:7/1 A party went out yesterday in search of the body of Dr. Valentine Lammersman. who was drowned in the lake at the foot of Wood st. " 31 - L June 20:8/1 A teamster from Independence known as "Old Dan,' was killed on Clark ave. June 18. His foot caught in the wagon brake as he was getting on the load, and the horses ran away throwing him to the ground and dragging him some distance. (1) (2) Thomas Caley, five, was drowned June 20 in a cistern near Miles Rowe's. (1) 33 L June 22:8/1 - Johnnie Steinaeker, eight, was drowned June 20 while bathing in the lake near the woolen mills. (1) 34 L June 22:8/1 The body of Dr. Lammersman who was drowned a week ago in the lake at the foot of Wood st. was discovered yesterday floating in the lake about two miles from shore opposite the Marine hospital. 35 L June 23:7/1 - At the corner of Harkness and Euclid aves., June 21, a horse became unmanageable and ran away. The clothing of a young lady who was riding in the buggy became entangled in the buggy gearing while she was getting out and she fell. The buggy passed over her body injuring her seriously. (2) 36 L June 25; ed: 4/1 - A fearful accident which occurred in a Syracuse church June 23, killing several people and wounding hundreds, can be accredited to no cause but the grossest carelessness of the architect who supervised the building of the church. "The support of the second floor was so weak that even unpractised eyes decided that it was unsafe; but the contractor saved a few dollars in thus flimsily constructing the building, and that makes it all right." (3) 37 L June 27:7/1 - Charles Hestor, formerly of Bedford and for several years bookkeeper at the Cleveland Rolling Mills in Newburgh, was drowned at Paw Paw, Mich. on June 24. (2) 38 L June 29:8/1 - Thomas Curley was injured June 27 when he fell 13 feet at the iron ore docks. (1) 39 L June 30:7/2 Myer Weisberg and Michael Steiner, while driving down Woodland ave. yesterday, were thrown from their wagon. The head of the latter struck the iron gutter bridge, causing his instant death. Weisberg was severely injured. 40 L July 3:7/3 Two young maids of 16 were burned to death July 1 at the home of William M. Smith, 725 Republic st., when one poured gasoline on a fire. Christine Loss's dress caught fire and when Minnie Renner tried to extinguish the flames, her dress caught fire. The cause of his death was sunstroke. He came to this country from Ireland a week ago. 43 L July 11:8/1 - Otto Hessenmueller was rescued yesterday by the tugboat D. F. EDWARDS as he was attempting to swim to shore after his row boat capsized. 44 L July 13:8/2 Honey's block, a business building of stores and offices on Euclid ave., East Cleveland, caved in yesterday. Wallace Draper was killed and several others were seriously injured. 45 L July 16:7/1 - A runaway horse belonging to a Mr. Schneider and a Mr. Kleinschmidt yesterday dashed into the rear of a carriage in which Mrs. J. H. Cause and her two children were riding on St. Clair st. The carriage was smashed, throwing the lady and one of the children to the pavement. The lady was severely injured. (3) (2) (2) (21) (2) 46 L July 27:7/1 The son of Martin Striebinger shot and probably fatally injured himself on July 25 while pointing a gun toward his body. (2) 47 L Aug. 5:8/1 - Thomas A. Bartlett's horse was injured slightly on one foot when it ran away and smashed into a fence yesterday. 48 L Aug. 6:6/3 The 11 year old son of H. W. Luhr had his right arm broken by an angry elephant yesterday. Someone gave the animal at the menagerie some tobacco, thus arousing it to madness. 49 L Aug. 11:8/1 Charles Eagan, superintendent of the registry department of the Cleveland post office, was found dead in the river, under the dock near the Atlantic and Great Western depot, yesterday morning. At the time he was last seen alive, he was under the influence of liquor. It is believed he fell into the river, as no cause could be given for suicide and he showed no trace of bruises. 50 L Aug. 13:7/4 The 17 months old son of George Udall fell from the second story window of his house Aug. 11 and was seriously injured. (5) (7) (2) 51 L Aug. 28:7/1 - On Aug. 26 the son of a Mr. Roach of Third ave. in the 18th ward, was bitten in the face by a horse.
