No person having received the necessary constitutional majority, a call of the roll was again ordered, resulting as follows:

Mr. Shanahan, having received the necessary constitutional majority, was declared elected Temporary Speaker.

Mr. Shurtleff offered the following resolution and moved its adoption:

HOUSE RESOLUTION No. 12.

Resolved, That a committee of nine members be appointed by the Secretary of State to conduct the Temporary Speaker to the chair.

And the resolution was adopted.

The Secretary of State thereupon appointed as such committee Messrs. Provine, Browne, W. J. Graham, Shurtleff, Tice, Igoe, Kane, Elliott and Farrell.

Whereupon the committee conducted the Temporary Speaker, the Hon. David E. Shanahan, to the chair, who, after taking the oath of office, announced the next order of business to be the election of a Temporary Clerk.

Mr. Smejkal placed in nomination for Temporary Clerk Mr. B. H. McCann of McLean County.

There being no other nominations, a call of the roll was had, resulting as follows:

Mr. McCann, having received the necessary constitutional majority, was declared elected Temporary Clerk.

Mr. Tice offered the following resolution and moved its adoption:

HOUSE RESOLUTION No. 13.

WHEREAS, The Hon. Lewis G. Stevenson, Secretary of State, has presided over the deliberations of the House from January 6, to February 16, pending the election of a Temporary Speaker, with uniform courtesy and fairness to all; therefore, be it

Resolved, That we extend to him a vote of thanks as an evidence of our appreciation of his able and efficient service during such time; and, be it further

Resolved, That the Clerk present to the said Lewis G. Stevenson, a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution, and that the same be spread at large upon the records of the House.

And the resolution was unanimously adopted.

At the hour of 1:50 o'clock p. m., Mr. McCormick moved that the House do now adjourn until 10:00 o'clock a. m. tomorrow.

The motion prevailed,

And the House stood adjourned.

The Temporary Speaker in the Chair.

The Journal of yesterday was being read, when, on motion of Mr. Holaday, the further reading of the same was dispensed with, and it was ordered to stand approved.

Mr. Burns offered the following resolution and moved its adoption:

HOUSE RESOLUTION No. 14.

Resolved, That the House now proceed to the election of a Temporary Doorkeeper.

And the resolution was adopted.

Whereupon, Mr. Burns placed in nomination for Temporary Doorkeeper Mr. John Maloney of Sangamon.

There being no other nominations, Mr. Maloney was declared unanimously elected Temporary Doorkeeper.

Mr. Turnbaugh offered the following resolution, and moved its adoption:

HOUSE RESOLUTION No. 15.

Resolved, That a Committee on Credentials, consisting of nine members, be appointed by the Temporary Speaker, to which committee shall be referred the certificates of election, held by the members elect, of this House.

And the resolution was adopted.

The Temporary Speaker thereupon appointed as such committee, Messrs. Turnbaugh, Tice, Lynch, Scholes, Dahlberg, F. J. Ryan, Burns, Fahy and Kane.

Mr. Turnbaugh from the Committee on Credentials, made the following report:

We, your Committee on Credentials, beg leave to report that we have carefully examined the certificates of election and find that the following named members hold the certificates from the Governor of the State of Illinois, showing their election to the House of Representatives of the Fortyninth General Assembly, entitling them to seats upon the floor of the House.
