A STUDY OF CARDUUS MARIANUS

ALTHOUGH the writer has not made an intensive search. of the literature in order to ascertain the existence of extensive provings or other investigations with this drug, an examination of the usual sources fails to reveal any study which warrants statements frequently found in homeopathic text books of materia medica. Reference to many homeopathic text books will reveal that the drug is alleged to be indicated in diseases of the liver or portal system. Among the miscellaneous conditions also found are "influenza when the liver is affected," "diseases of miners associated with asthma," and a number of other indeterminate states. A very careful search of non-homeopathic and non-eclectic literature fails to show any evidence of its inclusion into the practice of medicine.

Since no actual evidence beyond rather hazy clinical experience is found justifying the use of the drug, we determined to make a brief study of the action of the drug.

In order to ascertain the tissue changes six rabbits were used. The dosage at the beginning of the work was ten drops of the alcohol free tincture. After ten days of watchful waiting for symptoms (which did not appear) the dosage was increased until twenty minims three times a day were given. In only one instance did symptoms appear and in this instance they resulted from infection at the site of inoculation of the drug.
