HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

MONDAY, JANUARY 6, 1862.

This being the day designated by the Constitution of Ohio for the meeting of the General Assembly, it being the Fifty-fifth Session of the State, and the sixth under the New Constitution. the Secretary of State, as provided by law, in the chair of the House of Representatives, at 10 o'clock A. M., and called the appeared House to order.

Prayer by the Rev. Dr. Smith.

Mr Harrison, of Clark, was appointed Clerk pro tem.

Whereupon the following named gentlemen appeared, produced certificates of election, and being duly sworn to support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the State of Ohio, and discharge with fidelity the duties of Representatives of the State of Ohio, by the Hon. Milton Sutliff, one of the Judges of the Supreme Court of the State of Ohio, took their seats as members of the House of Representatives, to wit:

The next business in order was the election of Speaker.
Mr. Reilly nominated James R. Hubbell, of Delaware.
Mr. Stiers nominated George L. Converse, of Franklin.
The roll was called, and

Mr. Hubbell received....

Mr. Converse received

Those who voted for Mr. Hubbell were-

66 votes.

28 votes.

Messrs Babcock, Bartram, Bates, Bayard, Brachman, Bradbury, Clarke, Cook, Cory, Crain, Crouse, Dickman, Fee of Vinton, Ferrill, Flagg, Glessner, Griswold, Harrison, Harsh, Hills, Howe, Huston, Johnston, Keck, Keyser of Noble, Krum, Lemen, Lind, Masters, Means, Miller, Montgomery, Myers, McClellan, McGill, Norris, Odlin, Osborn, Patterson, Pierce, Pursell, Randall, Reamy, Reilly, Robb, Roberts, Rockwell, Ross, Sayler, Schell, Scott, Sieg, Smith, Stanton, Stewart, Stiver, Thorp, Tiffany, Wallar, Warner, Wells, West, Whitney, Wilkin, Woodbury and Zinn.

Those who voted for Mr. Converse were

Messrs. Ault, Blecker, Boesel, Dresel, Fee of Brown, Ferguson, Gribben, High, Holden, Jeffries, Keyser of Monroe, Lott, Maffett, Monroe, Reisinger, Smythe, Snyder, Stiers, Taylor, Titus, Uhl, Vance and Wilson.

Mr. Hubbell voted for Mr. Reilly.

Mr. Converse voted for Mr. Stiers.

Mr. Hubbell, having received a majority of all the votes cast, was declared duly elected.

Messrs. Myers, Smith, and Converse were appointed a committee to wait upon the Speaker and conduct him to the chair.

On taking the chair, Mr. Hubbell addressed the House as follows:

GENTLEMEN OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES:-For the honor you have conferred upon me, in choosing me to preside over your deliberations, I return you my sincere and heartfelt thanks. The only reward I can make you for this manifestation of your confidence and partiality, is to give you my earnest assurance that I shall endeavor, as your presiding officer, impartially and faithfully to execute your will to the best of my judgment and ability. In entering upon the discharge of the duties of the chair, I have not the vanity to indulge in the belief that I shall at all times escape your just and reason ble criticism; but I beg you to be assured that my errors will be errors of the head, and that I shall be as prompt, when convinced, to retract them, as I shall be reluctant to commit them. And may we all remember, that while "it is human to err, to forgive is divine.” Again, gentlemen, I thank you.

The House then proceeded to the election of Clerk, when

Mr. West nominated Edward Kinsman, of Cuyahoga.

Mr. Keyser, of Monroe, nominated James W. Walton, of Monroe.
