370 - L Jan. 25:3/2 - The Sunday school of the Second Presbyterian church held its 18th anniversary Jan. 23. Singing, addresses, presentations of good things to the children, and the enjoyment of a rich feast characterized the occasion.

371 L Feb. 15; ed: 2/1 There was a singularly impressive scene presented in the Presbyterian church of Paducah Feb. 9. Commodore Foote with his men went to the church on that day, but the preacher did not appear. The commander then occupied the pulpit and preached from the text: "Let not your hearts be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in Me."

The church was crowded, and the congregation was delighted. The commodore is an earnest Christian as well as an able commander. (5)

372 L Feb. 22:3/2 The Sunday school of the Westminster church, corner of Prospect and Huntington sts., held its annual festival Feb. 20, which was largely attended by pupils, teachers, and parents.

373 L May 12:3/1 - Yesterday being the second Sunday in May, the Mayflower mission Sunday school held its annual anniversary. The school at present has 40 classes, with 511 scholars enrolled. E. P. Ingersoll and Professor Saylor made a few well-timed remarks. piano has been secured and a steady improvement in music is perceptible. (5)

377 L Jan. 27:3/3 - In a letter to the editor, Cyril Wilson says: wish to say through your columns that the Friends in Mayfield met in the church on Jan. 16. 16. The result was a cheerful time generally, and substantial evidence of their regard for their pastor and his family, in that they left behind $90 in cash, and other valuables for our comfort. (5)

378 L Jan. 14:3/3,4 The Cleveland Sunday School union held its annual meeting at the Second Presbyterian church last evening. Reports were read from 28 of the union schools. The secretary, Charles Dockstader, submitted a statement showing the rise and progress of Sunday schools in Cleveland and vicinity dating from the year 1819, and of the founders and first scholars.

Also at this meeting the same board of officers of the association was re-elected.

The Hon. Elisha Taylor, the pioneer of Sunday schools in Cleveland, died on Apr. 24, 1861 at the age of 75 years. After planting the first Sunday school tree, Mr. Taylor lived 40 years to see more than 40 branches spreading over Cleveland and vicinity.

The annual report for the year 1861 was read by the secretary.
Benediction was pronounced by the Rev. William Day.

A Sunday school convention for Ohio will be held in Cleveland May 18. Arrangements have been made for obtaining full statistics of Sunday schools in Ohio, to be reported to the convention. James Hoyt, T. P. Handy, S. Foljambe.

appointment of George F. Davis of Cincinnati as president pro tem and H. Colby of Mansfield as secretary.

On taking the chair, Mr. Davis eloquently referred to the great work being done by the Sunday schools of Ohio, and extolled the labors of the teachers as among the noblest and most valuable in the cause of Christ.

A committee of four was appointed for the nomination of permanent officers. The nominees are Chauncey B. Olds, president; A. B. King, secretary; and C. H. Martindale, treasurer.

At the afternoon session the executive committee submitted a lengthy annual report. An analysis of this report shows that over 40 per cent of the schools reported are held only part of the year. Only 26 per cent of the youth of the state are enrolled in Sunday schools. The average attendance is 18 per cent.

The Cuyahoga county report shows an enrollment of about 23 per cent and an average attendance of about 17 per cent.

Cash raised for Sunday school purposes amounted to $1,205.11; cash raised for missionary purposes amounted to $233.28; total amount, $1,438. 39. The report was accepted and referred to the business committee. Representatives from various counties were then allowed to make a few short remarks.

At the evening session the Rev. W. H. Goodrich of the First Presbyterian curch, the Rev. L. Clark of the East Cleveland Methodist Episcopal church, and the Reverend Messrs. Grosvenor, Cormack, and William Young talked on "Children and the Scriptures."

383 L May 15:3/2,3 The Ohio Sunday school convention set the place and time for its next meeting as Dayton on the last Tuesday in May, 1863. The reports of the delegates from the various counties were resumed. A resolution of sympathy was tendered Commander Foote.

At the evening session the report of the business committee of the appointment of a committee for the state was presented and accepted.

Mr. Byron of Illinois and Wisconsin gave a most flattering and gratifying account of the results of the labor of the workers in the cause in those states.

384 L May 25:3/3 The teachers and children of St. Paul's, Westminster, Union mission, United Presbyterian, and First Presbyterian Sunday schools are requested to meet at the Stone church today and tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. (1) 385 L June 14:3/1 - The monthly meeting of the Cleveland Sunday school union was held June 7 at the Second Presbyterian church. It was one of much interest. Reports of different schools of the city were read. At this meeting 27 schools were represented, to which belong over 500 teachers and nearly 5,000 children.

The Rev. Samuel Wolcott of the Plymouth Congregational church, who delivered the address, was for three years a missionary in Palestine. (12)

386 L June 17:3/2 The Cuyahoga Sunday school convention will meet in this city in the First Baptist church June 21 instead of June 30.

The pastors of churches and superintendents and friends of Sunday schools in this county are invited.

387 L June 23:3/1 - A good response was given to the call for the Cuyahoga Sunday school convention by the attendance of representatives from the city and townships.

T. P. Handy was chosen president. A committee of five was chosen to report to the convention a constitution for the organization and a plan of statistics for Sunday schools. The constitution and plans were adopted. The union is now fully prepared for its labors, and all friends of religious education are cordially invited to cooperate.
