The bill of the House (H. R. 640) for the relief of Wendell Trout, with the amendment of the Senate thereto, was next taken up, and the said amendment agreed to.

A resolution and bill of the Senate of the following titles, viz:

S. Res. 31. A resolution explanatory of the eighth section of the act of Congress approved February 28, 1859.

S. 450. An act to change the location of the custom-house for the district of Brazos de Santiago from Point Isabel to Brownsville, in the State of Texas;

were severally read a first and second time, and referred as follows,

viz:

S. Res. 31, to the Committee of Ways and Means; and

S. 450, to the Committee on Commerce.

A message from the Senate, by Mr. Hickey, their Chief Clerk: Mr. Speaker: The Senate have passed a bill of the following title, viz:

S. 149. An act making appropriations to supply a deficiency in the appropriations for the completion of the geological survey of Oregon and Washington Territory;

in which I am directed to ask the concurrence of this House.

The Senate have also passed bills of this House of the following titles, viz:

H. R. 394. An act for the relief of Mary J. Maddux; and

H. R. 520. An act directing the conveyance of a lot of ground for the use of the public schools of the city of Washington;

the former without and the latter with an amendment; in which I am directed to ask the concurrence of this House.

Mr. Davidson, from the Committee on Enrolled Bills, reported that the Committee had examined and found truly enrolled a bill of the following title, viz:'

H. R. 394. An act for the relief of Mary J. Maddux.

The House then resumed the consideration of the joint resolution (H. Res. 22) in relation to the public printing; the pending question being on its engrossment.

Mr. Gurley submitted an amendment in the nature of a substitute for the said joint resolution.

Mr. Barr moved to amend the said amendment by inserting at the end of line 11, in section 1, the words "and the Secretary of the Treasury."

On motion of Mr. Houston, by unanimous consent, Ordered, That an amendment to be proposed by him, when in order, be printed.

Mr. Clopton moved that the joint resolution be recommitted to the Committee on Printing, with instructions to report forthwith a bill to provide by contract with the lowest responsible bidder for executing the printing and binding authorized by the Senate and House of Rep resentatives, the executive and judicial departments, and the Court of Claims, and for all classes of paper used in the public printing and binding."

Pending which,

Mr. Allen, by unanimous consent, introduced a bill (H. R. 800) granting a pension to Samuel Elsen; which was read a first and second time, and referred to the Committee on Invalid Pensions.

The Speaker, by unanimous consent, laid before the House a letter from the Secretary of War, transmitting the report of a board of officers of the army and militia upon the re-organization of the militia of the District of Columbia; which was referred to the Committee on Military Affairs, and ordered to be printed.

Mr. Reynolds, by unanimous consent, from the Committee on the Judiciary, to whom was referred the bill of the Senate (S. 464) to

amend an act entitled "An act in addition to the acts prohibiting the slave trade," reported the same with amendments, accompanied by a report in writing thereon.

Ordered, That the further consideration of the said bill be postponed until Monday next, and that the bill, amendments, and report be printed.

On motion of Mr. Taylor, by unanimous consent,

Ordered, That an amendment proposed to be submitted by him to the said bill be printed.

A message from the Senate, by Mr. Hickey, their Chief Clerk: Mr. Speaker: The Senate insist on its disagreement to the amend ment of the House of Representatives to the bill (S. 416) "to secure homesteads to actual settlers on the public domain, and for other purposes," and agree to the conference asked for by the House on the disagreeing votes of the two houses thereon, and have appointed Mr. Johnson, of Tennessee, Mr. Johnson, of Arkansas, and Mr. Harlan the committee on the part of the Senate.

The Senate have passed bills of this House of the following titles, viz:

H. R. 656. An act to grant a pension to Mary I. Harris, widow of Colonel Thomas L. Harris, deceased; and

H. R. 367. An act for the relief of Braxton Bragg and Randall L. Gibson;

the former with an amendment, in which I am directed to ask the concurrence of this House, and the latter without amendment.

The Senate have passed a bill of the following title, viz:

S. 11. An act to provide for the payment of expenses incurred by the Territories of Washington and Oregon in the suppression of Indian hostilities therein in the years 1855 and 1856;

in which I am directed to ask the concurrence of this House.

The House then resumed the consideration of the joint resolution of the House (H. Res. 22) in relation to the public printing-being the unfinished business in which the House was engaged at the adjournment yesterday; the pending question being on the motion of Mr. Clopton to recommit the resolution and pending amendments to the Committee on Printing with instructions.

After debate,

Mr. Clopton withdrew his said motion.

The question then recurred on the amendment of Mr. Barr to the amendment of Mr. Gurley.
