It was accordingly read the third time and passed.

Ordered, That the Clerk acquaint the Senate therewith.

Mr. Mallory moved that the vote by which the said resolution was passed be reconsidered, and also moved that the motion to reconsider be laid on the table; which latter motion was agreed to.

Mr. Curtis, (the rules having been suspended for that purpose,) submitted the following resolution; which was read, considered, and agreed to, viz:

Resolved, That the bill of the House (H. R. 646) "to secure contracts and make provision for the safe, certain, ard more speedy transportation, by railroad, of mails, troops, munitions of war, military and naval stores between the Atlantic States and those of the Pacific, and for other purposes," be made the special order of the day for Thursday, 24th instant, after the expiration of the morning hour. Mr. Curtis moved that the vote last taken be reconsidered, and also moved that the motion to reconsider be laid on the table; which latter motion was agreed to.

Mr. Cobb having called up the motion heretofore submitted by him to reconsider the vote by which the bill of the House (H. R. 44)" confirming certain land entries under the 3d section of the act of 3d March, 1855, entitled 'An act making appropriations for the service of the Post Office Department during the fiscal year ending the 30th June, 1856, with an amendment of the Senate thereto, was referred to the Committee on Public Lands

The said vote was reconsidered.

And the motion to refer having been withdrawn,

The Speaker stated the question to be on agreeing to the said amendment of the Senate.

Peuding which,

Mr. Cobb submitted an amendment thereto; which was agreed to. The said amendment as amended was then agreed to.

Ordered, That the Clerk request the concurrence of the Senate in the amendment of the House to their said amendment.

Mr. Cobb moved that the vote by which the said amendment as amended was agreed to be reconsidered, and also moved that the motion to reconsider be laid on the table; which latter motion was agreed

to.

Mr. Lovejoy moved that the rules be suspended, so as to discharge the Committee on Public Lands from the further consideration of the bill of the Senate (S. 416) to secure homesteads to actual settlers on the public domain, and for other purposes, and to enable the House to consider the same.

Pending which,

Mr. Reagan moved that there be a call of the House; which motion. was disagreed to.

The question then recurred on the motion of Mr. Lovejoy.

And being put,

It was decided in the affirmative,{

Two-thirds voting in favor thereof.

The Speaker having stated the question to be on its third reading, Mr. Lovejoy submitted an amendment in the nature of a substitute therefor, the said amendment being to strike out all after the enacting clause of the bill, and insert in lieu thereof the words of the House bill heretofore passed.
