So the House refused to suspend the rules.

On motion of Mr. Davidson, by unanimous consent, the Committee of the Whole House were discharged from the further consideration of the bill of the Senate (S. 104) for the final adjustment of private land claims in the States of Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Missouri, and for other purposes, and the House proceeded to its consideration.

The Speaker having stated the question to be on agreeing to the pending amendments thereto,

The said amendments were agreed to, and the bill ordered to be read a third time.

It was accordingly read the third time and passed.

Mr. Davidson moved that the vote last taken be reconsidered, and also moved that the motion to reconsider be laid on the table; which latter motion was agreed to.

Ordered, That the Clerk request the concurrence of the Senate in the amendments of the House to the said bill.

Mr. Cobb, from the committee of conference on the disagreeing votes of the two houses on the bill of the House (H. R. 44) confirming certain land entries under the 3d section of the act of 3d March, 1855, entitled "An act making appropriations for the service of the Post Office Department during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1856," made the following report, viz:

"The committee of conference on the disagreeing votes of the two houses on the bill (H. R. 44) 'confirming certain land entries under the 3d section of the act of 3d March, 1855, entitled An act making appropriations for the service of the Post Office Department during the fiscal year ending the 30th June, 1856,' report that, having met, after a full and free conference, they have agreed to recommend, and do recommend, to their respective houses as follows:

"To amend the said bill by inserting in line 4, on page 2, after the word entries' upon payment of one dollar and twenty-five cents per acre for the land embraced in such patent.'

"The committee also agree to the amendment of the House with the above amendment, and recommend the concurrence of the Senate in the House amendment, and that the bill with the amendment recommended by the committee be passed. "Managers on the part of the House

The same having been read,

Mr. Theaker moved that the rules be suspended, so as to discharge the Committee of the Whole House on the state of the Union from the further consideration of the bill of the House (H. R. 71) to reduce the compensation and mileage of senators, representatives, and delegates in Congress, and to enable the House to consider the same.

And the question being put, it was decided in the negative-twothirds not voting in favor thereof.

Mr. Cadwalader C. Washburn moved that the rules be suspended, so as to discharge the Committee of the Whole House from the further consideration of the bill of the. House (H. R. 341) for the relief of Moses Meeker, and to enable the House to consider the same. And the question being put,

Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives be, and he is hereby, directed to pay, out of the contingent fund, to each of the book folders appointed by the Doorkeeper, two dollars and fifty cents per day for every day which such book folders may have been employed in folding books, or in attendance ready to do any folding that might be wanted; out of which shall be deducted whatever sums shall have been paid to such book folders on said account respectively. The number of days and amount due in each case to be ascertained and certified by the Committee on Accounts.
