spent therein the Speaker resumed the chair, and Mr. Samuel S. Cox reported that the committee, having had under consideration the bill of the House, H. R. 902, (Army appropriation bill,) bad come to no reso lution thereon. Mr. Atkins moved that when the House next resolved itself into the Committee of the Whole House on the state of the Union on the Army bill, all debate on the pending paragraph and amendment be limited to ten minutes. Pending which, Mr. Finley moved to amend by striking out "ten" and inserting "twenty;" which motion was not agreed to. The question then recurring on the motion of Mr. Atkins, the same was agreed to. Mr. Atkins moved to reconsider the vote last taken, and also moved that the motion to reconsider be laid on the table; which latter motion was agreed to. And then, On motion of Mr. Atkins, the House resolved itself into the Committee of the Whole House on the state of the Union; and after some time spent therein the Speaker resumed the chair, and Mr. Samuel S. Cox reported that the committee, having had under consideration the bill of the House (H. R. 902) making appropriations for the support of the Army for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1878, and for other purposes, with sundry amendments thereto, and had instructed him to report the same. Mr. Atkins moved the previous question; which was seconded and the main question ordered. Pending which, Mr. Blount, at 3 o'clock and 30 minutes p. m., moved that the House adjourn; which motion was disagreed to. The question then being on the following amendment, viz: Strike out the following, (being all after the word "dollars," in line 11, to and including the word "expired," in line 21:) "And no money appropriated by this act shall be paid for recruiting the Army beyond the number of enlisted men, including Indian scouts and hospital stewards, actually on the Army rolls on the 1st day of November, A. D. 1877. Nothing, however, in this act shall be construed to prevent enlistments for the Signal Service, which shall hereafter be maintained, as now organized, and as provided by law, with a force of enlisted men not exceeding four hundred, after present terms of enlistwent have expired." Pending which, Mr. Springer moved to reconsider the vote by which the main ques tion was ordered. Pending which, Mr. Conger moved that the said motion do lie on the table; which latter motion was agreed to. The question then recurring on the said amendment, Pending which, Mr. Eden at 3 o'clock and 33 minutes p. m., moved that the House adjourn.
